The individual circuit view has really helped me find some major drains in my house that I don't think inwould have found with a whole house solution. Something like a dieing refrigerator compressor suddenly using twice as much energy wouldn't show up on a whole house but is noticeable on single circuit tracking.

I know nothing about this company, but if their products are only available at Aliexpress, Amazon, and eBay, that's probably not a good sign.

Also, the Vue can be flashed with esphome which is nice if you're in that or the HA ecosystem.

Does anyone have an energy monitor from this company? I like the idea of a smart energy monitor but haven't done a lot of research
I've one of their HomeKit compatible dimmer switches with a secondary remote. Works as advertised. No issues.

Different class of product but I'd consider them again for something else.

I have a small smart energy monitor on the mains. My breaker box does not have a cutoff for the mains. I had on good high voltage electrical gloves, but man it was tense for me to clip those induction clamps over those leads.

Do we really need energy tracking per circuit? Can we not directly 'read' from electric meter outside using RF or espCAM?
I have no idea what you need. That is for you to decide.

Power can be cut at your meter. You were right to be nervous as you should never remove the cover to a live panel.

This doesn't appear to be UL listed. No way I'm putting that in my panel

I can't comment on this one, but I have 2 Vues flashed with esphome connected to HA and am very happy with it. It's a well established device so hard to go wrong with it as long as you're comfortable with the flashing process. I am awful with soldering, but was able to use tiny hand operated drill bits to clear out the filled ports and flash with no trouble.

It's non-contact.

It doesn't need to be UL listed any more than your TV remote does.

Besides, UL listing isn't a trustworthy system to begin with. There's tons of listings that simply piggyback ones that are already filed and the amount of bribery that goes on is rampant.

How is this compared to the Sense Energy Meter, I've had Sense for many years, and tbh I'm not very happy with it. It takes ages to find things and has too many items in the not found bubbles
Same. I got one to see how it goes for a few weeks. It's not been accurate in the first few days e.g. it said my spa was the coffee maker, despite massively difference electrical usage

These need a way to shorten the wires. Other ones turn the breaker box into a mess

I'm pretty biased on this, but I would totally pay the price difference for an Emporia Vue 3, or just buy a Vue 2 (which is pretty much the exact same tech as this, and the same price, and has been on the market for a few years). I currently run multiple Emporia Vue 2 units, and use them extensively in conjunction with Home Assistant for power management. I'm pretty sure the internal electronics are similar enough to be irrelevant, but Emporia is a US company with US based support, and that's huge when it comes to getting help for something that deals with mains voltage and has to deal with all kinds of quirks of home wiring.

CTs are non-contact, but to power the system (and for voltage sensing) you're still hooking directly to a breaker with wires. The box also lives inside your breaker box. UL tested is definitely preferred.

What is the use case for this?
I have an Emporia Vue but this looks like it's a similar device. I got mine mostly so I could have real data to help determine how much generation/inverter/storage I need to invest in to run different circuits (particularly large appliances like AC) and comparing estimated vs actual results when I make improvements.

Another use is to create automations based on what is observed. For example sending notifications when your washer/dryer or dishwasher are done or that your stove was left on.

I've been using the GreenEye Monitor [brultech.com] from Brultech [brultech.com] for over 10 years now with any problems. It is more expensive than this deal but it is also more capable than this deal.
  • 32 channels
  • CT's are connected via 2 wires and the wires can be trimmed as desired
  • power is 5V DC via barrel plug (wall wart; I eventually switched over to a PoE to DC plug adapter)
  • lives outside the panel
  • monitors AC line voltage levels (different wall wart) for more accurate usage power calculations
  • physical ethernet (wifi is an option)
  • supports net metering if doing solar/selling back to the grid, but it does require paying attention to the orientation of the CTs during the installation
  • all 32 channels can report as fast as every 8 seconds

Edit: 32 channels might seem like overkill, but I am actually using all of them. I monitor every breaker individually as well as each leg of the incoming feed from the power company. I also have a whole home surge protector that I have CTs on each leg to monitor if it is actually doing anything.
