In his journal, Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck called East of Eden "the first book," and indeed it has the primordial power and simplicity of myth. Set in the rich farmland of California's Salinas Valley, this sprawling and often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families—the Trasks and the Hamiltons—whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.
The masterpiece of Steinbeck's later years, East of Eden is a work in which Steinbeck created his most mesmerizing characters and explored his most enduring themes: the mystery of identity, the inexplicability of love, and the murderous consequences of love's absence. Adapted for the 1955 film directed by Elia Kazan introducing James Dean, and read by thousands as the book that brought Oprah's Book Club back, East of Eden has remained vitally present in American culture for over half a century.

This is one of the best novels I've ever read in my life. I still reread it every few years. The character development, storyline and human conflicts are all well written and crafted
The Count of Monte-Cristo is another one that I would highly recommend

I love this book. Wish they made us read this instead of Grapes of Wrath in high school.
My plan for when I reread East of Eden is to skip every single Cathy chapter. It worked wonders for my Breaking Bad rewatch when I skipped all the Skyler scenes.

And don't forget to binge Malcolm in the Middle afterwards, just pretend it's Walter White in witness protection.
This eBook is probably free from you local library.
It's always worth checking there first, but almost all the Steinbeck ebooks and audiobooks have long waits at my library (via Libby) — 24 weeks for East of Eden.

I get what you mean, in high school over summer break we had to read "Fahrenheit 451" and Maya Angelou's, "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings". I read Grapes of Wrath afterwards and it just didn't land.
I almost bit - but Amazon web in the desktop reminded me I bought this in 2019 (the mobile version did not warn me). Looks like I got it for 1.99 - I bet it was slickdeals. Great book!
Read a Bible. The guy just makes an overlay after reading the Bible. Is it really his? If I squint my eyes and look at the Mona Lisa and make a sketch or painting and you see me do it is that original? Who buys books which are just light table sketches of other peoples books? The smart? Yup, the smart.
