If this is a serious question, the answer is because mountain bikes are typically not ridden on roads with cars at night. The proper community safety device for most mountain bikes is a bell.

That is more likely your bottom bracket in my experience but could be a lot of things these most likely won't help.

How do these compare to raceface chester (or chester knockoffs)?

These are even cheaper than fookers (which I have run without any serious issue).

How do these compare with the pedals that came on my specialized bike?

Can the pins be removed for use without them? Or will the surface be too slippery without the plastic treads that are normally on non-MTB flats? Want to just use these on a beater around-town bike with regular shoes.

For the price it's worth a look to me. If anything I'll have a spare set of pedals.

I tried that with some other pedals. Regretted it 5 minutes into my first ride.

I would find some textured plastic platforms and not try to hack these.

Yes, the pins are stated to be removable, but the platform looks super smooth, and without the pins biting, I am afraid those will be too slippery.

$9.69 shipping for me, so I can get Fookers cheaper. Unless someone can chime in as to why this pedal is massively superior in some respect...I'm not running the bill up to $100 just for free shipping. I'm a biker on a Slickdeal budget.

Me likey. But I'm not keen on the shipping. And I'm also curious how they compare to the Chester's. I permanently lent mine to a friend when I switched to clipless.
