Remember, curcumin is the active ingredient naturally found in the root known as turmeric, which looks similar to ginger. Turmeric is then processed into the spice powder you see in stores. However, curcumin makes up only about 3% of turmeric powder. While you can use turmeric as a spice in your food, the amount of curcumin in it is so small that you'd need to consume a large quantity to get a meaningful dose of curcumin for its supplemental benefits.

For example, I've seen turmeric powder sold at Trader Joe's in small jars for a high price. Many people believe they're getting curcumin or use the terms turmeric and curcumin interchangeably, but they aren't the same. If you're just looking for turmeric as a spice, I suggest shopping at South Asian grocery stores where you can find turmeric powder in larger quantities and at better prices.

This supplement, like many others, is standardized to 95% curcumin, which is what you need if you're looking for curcumin as a supplement. However, curcumin is known to have poor absorption in the body. To enhance absorption, piperine (an active ingredient in black pepper) is often used and should be included with curcumin to maximize its health benefits. This particular product includes piperine, which is great.

Most curcumin supplements come in capsules, which are often made from gelatin (derived from pork, or sometimes bovine, which would be specified). If you want to avoid pork products, you can simply unscrew the capsule with dry hands and extract the curcumin powder to mix into juices, teas, or smoothies.

Additionally, you don't always need to take the full dose listed on the bottle. Everyone's body chemistry is different, and some people may experience side effects like headaches, especially if they have kidney or liver issues. To minimize the risk of side effects, you can start with a smaller dose by unscrewing the capsule and using just a portion of the powder, then resealing the capsule for later use. Spreading the dose throughout the day can also help ensure a steady supply in your system, rather than having your body flush out the excess. This approach helps you get the most out of the supplement with fewer side effects.

Lastly, turmeric/curcumin easily stain everything very easily and the stain is stubborn. It also easily gets in your fingers if you touch it slightly. So, when unscrewing the capsule, just make sure your fingers are dry, and you dont touch the powder itself while handling the capsule.

I started taking curcumin for random middle aged aches, and it's been game changing. I also started it while hitting the gym and reversing f2 fatty liver and have seen dramatic improvements. (41M)

I would just add that this specific product has 900mg of tumeric and only 100mg of 95% curcumin.
