They have an on/off switch or button on the side, and a separate speed control dial.
If you want variable speed trigger, you need to stick with the standard D handle jigsaw.
Honestly carpenters usually have both, they are good for different things. But once you get used to the barrel grip, you'll probably find yourself using that much more. You learn to control the speed of cutting with pressure rather than blade movement.
