Tried this one out a few years ago. Crazy amount of glare due to the distance the lens is from the windshield would not recommend

I have the mini 2, while I was extremely excited when I first got it, the dashcam is not very reliable. I've noticed several trips that have gone unrecorded, had I been in an accident the dashcam would have missed those incidents. As such the mini 2 gives a false sense of security. I did call support and after the usual recommendations of reformatting the sd card, trying a new sd card (I've used both Samsung and Sandisk) the support tech said he'd log a case and they'd get to it soon. It's been a year now and I haven't heard back.

I've been using the original Dash Cam Mini for 4+ years. Still works great. I tend to "set it and forget it" but when I've had to pull video from it, it works.

Anyone on SD have real world experience with this model? I've been following it for a few years but the reviews on the prior model and this one put me off. Especially the overheating problems, voice problems, and reliability issues. Would bite if it was cheaper.

I have a very small non name cheap dashcam that is attached to the base with a magnet so I can quickly remove it when needed to keep it out of the heat. I would just like to have something with voice control. I need something that is less that 4 square inches as well if it is to be attached to the windshield.

I don't own one but want to note that the Garmin Dash Cam Mini 3 looks like it was released earlier this month. I have been unable to find a good comparison between the 2 and 3. The best I can discern is that the 3 includes a polarized lens, which is a $30 add-on with the 2. The 3 also has a different form factor than the 2. Other Specs. appear to be the same. I wish I could find a write up from someone more knowledgeable than me because I just started researching when this deal alert came through this morning.

The 2 is available widely at other retailers for the $99.99 Amazon price as retailers must be closing these out to make room for the 3.

As I see it, the 2 with the filter (which I've read is a good idea) is $130 ($100+$30) vs $150 for the 3. I ask myself what else has changed in the 3 and is it worth $20 for the latest and greatest version that will likely be supported longer?

I would love to hear from anybody who has better knowledge and/or experience. I'm very strongly considering one of these models.

I've had one since March and it's been amazing. It's very small and tucks pretty neatly behind the mirror. The phrases to save a photo or record what happened are pretty handy. The app is pretty good and you can see a live view and you can easily save photos and videos to your camera roll

This is one I'm considering but I'm interested to see what other options people might suggest. My use would be in a work truck to record evidence of someone else's liability in case of an accident. I want something reliable and easy to use, that rarely needs to be touched.

I've put of getting one for work, partly because the cheap one I tried several years ago was complete garbage and really turned me off to the concept. Some recent close calls have convinced me to get a camera though. Just the other day, a disabled man basically jumped out in front of me, crossing despite the don't walk sign when I had already begun my legal and proper turn. I had the right of way but who do you think a cop or inattentive witness would have believed, a man who could barely walk and was a resident of a very wealthy suburb, or some guy driving a box truck?

I recommend getting a VIOFO brand camera. One of the big reasons is that VIOFO has a bluetooth button you can mount with adhesive. So when you see something worth securing, you can tap the button and hear and audible confirmation from the camera. No more having to raise your hand up and reach to hit the button on the mounted camera on the windshield.

Too many negative reviews on Amazon and video reviews elsewhere.

My previous model was replaced 3 times until I asked to please replace it with this model, no overheating to the point of melting anymore, it's a good dash cam pretty reliable I just find useless the voice activation and I mean 1080p is just OK but great in case you need to deal with your insurance.

Yep, been using one for a couple years now. I popped in an old 128gb memory card I had and it's been solid for me, no overheating...has not happened once. Voice commands work fine, video quality is fine, this is not a top of the line camera but it's pretty great. It's the smallest one I could find so it's completely out of my view which was one of the most important things to me. I got it as a Christmas gift, I would definitely get it again.

If you have a powered mirror there are small harness adapters available to buy so you can have a very tidy install. I do not so I hardwired mine with this kit:

If you want to see the camera quality you can watch my compilation video I made when reviewing all the stored clips I had a while back:

Is there any dashcam that's battery powered with solar, or any other design that avoids wiring?

I just don't like running the wire… why modern cars don't leave a usb port on the ceiling…

Yes, I think everyone should have a dash cam. I would get a cheap one ASAP until you find something more long term. Anything is better than nothing. Don't get hung up on resolution, features, etc. for a cheap one while you search for a good one IMO. Is it cheaper to have bought a few dashcams than having your insurance premium triple (or worse) for several years. The VIOFO ones like someone mentioned get good reviews.

This is my biggest concern as I'm limited to the size of anything that can be affixed to a windshield to 4 square inches in my state. The one I have now meets that requirement but does not have voice commands. I may wait to see if this goes lower since someone mentioned the Mini 3.

The Mini 3 is 2.041 inches x 1.244 inches so I might wait until it gets some longer term reviews. It is $150 on Garmin's site so may be a bit cheaper in the wild and not too far off of this. I don't mind paying more for a dashcam if it meets my requirements. Cheaper than being ripped off by insurance.
