I used to love iRobot but how does this model hold up to current competition?

A lot of reviews don't seem too fond of this robot vacuum over a long period of time. It seems commonly after a few months, navigation start to go haywire. At this price it might be worth it to test, but I personally believe lidar mapping is more useful than obstacle avoidance, which is why the good models have both.

Unfortunately this brand is struggling to keep up with competition due to lack of lidar.

Not sure about all the bots that flood roomba posts about lidar, but it is still a great model, and really great at this price.

Keep your expectations in check on these robots. iRobot used to lead the industry however that is simply not the case anymore. I own the J7+ and the experience has been subpar compared to other manufacturers such as Roborock.

Pros
Good obstacle avoidance
Customer service when still in warranty

Cons
Terrible reliability. Ive gone through 2 of these units in 2 years. Second one just died due to a "Communication Error"
Navigation - Gets confused very easily and frequently slams into furniture
Battery life - lasts about 25 minutes on a charge.
Duration of cleaning - Due to the short battery life it takes aprox 3 hours to vacuum my downstairs. (Roborock S7MaxV can complete it in less than 1)
App function - Where to start here.
-You cannot interupt it mid session and change what you want it to do and instead have to place it back on the dock, wait a few minutes to reconnect and finally you can change what you want it to do.
-It takes forrever to connect making it very time consuming to use the app.
-Spot cleaning requires editing the map.
-No live tracking so when the robot is cleaning you cannot view where it is or how much has been completed

Lidar is not the only problem. There are hardware issues that cause these units to fail within a couple years. Don't waste your money.

We have had this exact unit (refurbished) and it has performed great. It is not perfect but none of them are. I am happy if I get 2 years. And if not there is a 2 year warranty and I can promise you from other experiences Allstate is actually easy to work with. I also am happy I didn't pay 3-4 times as much as this roborock shill.
