Depends on the tree, but most nurseries sell 5g trees at around 4-6' tall. So yeah you can grow trees in 5g pots, but 6' would be your limit. Really depends on how aggressive the roots are, but two years seem reasonable.

Also, don't do seedlings in a 5g right away. You really need to have them in smaller containers and then transplant them to the 5g container. Going straight to 5g may kill your tree early because the soil won't dry fast enough.

I bought these exact ones a year ago at $19.99/12ct ($1.67/pc). They come with little labels you can write on to stick into the soil.

I do not claim to be a gardener, so I can't speculate accurately why some seeds flourished while others did not. That said, in the SoCal sun + costco soil, the following from seed grew quite well:

-Thai/Holy/Italian basil
-Sawtooth coriander
-Red/Green Shiso
-Cucumber
-Eggplant
-Fennel
-Spinach

What did not grow well:
-Coriander(Cilantro)
-Canteloupe
-Dill
-Parsley
-Bitter melon

Hope this helps.

Some of the reviews stated that these are on the smaller size for 5 gal.

FYI, one of the common complaints in the reviews is that the soil dries too quickly, requiring frequent watering. That's because water also evaporates from the sides, which are porous.

Yeah,I usually start out with clear plastic drinking ups with holes in the bottom and slide those into red solo cups. That way I can check on root growth and dirt conditions. Grew 120 persimmon seedlings that way after scooping them out of the starter seed tray.

Unfortunately, after moving some of them up pot sizes for a few years, the majority died out. They have deep roots and didn't do well after 3 growing seasons in pots. I was protecting them during the winter from the wind and harsh elements with packing insulation and 5' wooden fencing.

After year 1 I placed tree tubes on the best ones. They did ok. I wanted them to focus on growing tall and not as much on roots. They did ok. But not as good as the ones not in tubes.

I planned to transfer them out to my hunting property but other than the few I transferred from the solo cups, I don't think any of them survived to be planted from larger containers.

I did better just scattering 5 gallon buckets full of whole persimmons into my small clearing. Those trees are now hip high and I'm just weeding out the tall grass and undesirable brush and tree sycamore, maple and hickory seedlings.

My small plot is now going to be a fruit tree plot instead of a tilled plot. I will probably have pawpaws next season, dolgo crab, some Kieffer pears in 2 years and persimmons in a few years after that.
