Do not try to use this with a VPN, it will be so terribly slow. This would be useful if you needed to run this on battery or just as an access point. If you're going to be traveling and using public wifi at least bump yourself up to the "opal" which will give you vpn speed of 12Mbps open vpn or 65 Mbps wireguard.

If you're looking for best speeds you would want the slate ax travel router which can handle 500 Mbps wireguard speeds, or for home the Flint 2, which can go all the way up to 1 Gbps in wireguard.
For my needs I'd rather pay $31 for the GL.iNet Opal AC1200 that does 5 GHz and gigabit Ethernet. Generally faster and better handles simultaneous clients.

By running the VPN on the router you will send all traffic through the VPN on all devices. Otherwise you need to run your VPN on every single device independently.

Do you have to have your own VPN account or it will connect via VPN automatically?

How do these work. Can anyone explain? Why is this different from using a VPN on my phone or computer.

So you have to subscribe to a VPN provider to use this as a VPN right?

I got one of these for $9.90 (also renewed) back in Feb. It came in perfect condition (looked brand new). I recently took it on a trip and it worked well. I have more GL.inet devices than I'll ever need, but I guess that's the Slickdeals way. 😊 (I have some that are newer, more powerful, faster, etc., but I still took this one with me on my recent trip because it's so tiny.) They rate it as 45 Mbps of throughput using Wireguard VPNs (I haven't been able to get it to do Wireguard to my Unifi gateway/firewall, but it works fine talking to Windscribe).
