Just to confirm, the database is up to July 2nd of 2024? I got that update.

Is the main firmware still 1.12? And the sub firmware version is 1.10?
I only update the database (which is July 2024). I never update the firmware.
so this was the last DB file I updated (nothing else): R7_DFR7DFR9_GPS_DB_20240702.zip

What about Knoxville, TN?
There was 1 left at the Sam's north of Knoxville and I happened to stop in there when I saw this slick deal and picked it up. I asked the cashier and she said I had gotten the last one.

Got this a deal alert because I have 'Uniden' set up for keyword monitoring, but I wasn't expecting this one!

It's not worth buying a non-arrow detector nowadays. An arrow detector is worth the price because it gives you extra distance to react, especially when you're driving at highway speeds. You know exactly whether the threat is approaching you or coming from behind.

Without arrows, if you see a KA signal, you slow down, but it could actually be coming from behind you. The signal will become stronger and stronger, and finally the threat is passing you and right in front of you, potentially leaving you stuck at 60 mph for the next 5 10 15 20+ miles, depends on your luck, very annoying.

With arrows, if you see the signal coming from behind, you can maintain your own speed, whether it's 80 or 90 or 100 or whatever mph, and see if the detection goes away. Sometimes the detector just too strong to picks up a far away weak signal. Then you can enjoy the rest of the drive!
"Not worth buying" is bad advice.

If you're speeding, ANY Ka alert with the detector means SLOW DOWN. You don't need to know where it is. You just need to be wise and slow to the same speed as other cars. That's common sense.
You will eventually see the threat

I like the fact that laser detection is not even discussed. Doesn't matter if you have arrows or not, you're SOL. Ka signal is for lazy cops, but laser is for cops on a mission

I've been using a Uniden R8 now for a little over 6 months and I love it. Have done a few LA to Vegas trips and the R8 was a huge help - great range and accuracy.

Only problem I experienced was the charging cable it came with was causing my R8 to glitch out (kept freezing upon startup during the self-tests, and it was also causing the device to cycle through the dim/dimmer/bright/dark settings nonstop), so I had to buy another 3rd party brand from Amazon for $10 which resolved all those issues. Uniden wouldn't send me a new one because they only have a 90 day warranty on "accesorries" - kinda stupid but not the biggest deal I guess because the aftermarket cable I bought is longer and easier to tuck away as its not coiled like the Uniden cable.

I live in SoCal and have never once experienced any LEO agency using K band or laser (yet). The K band goes off every few minutes with false alerts due to other vehicles using k band as well as automatic door openers on buildings. Never have had a laser alert. Ka band is what LAPD, LASD, CA and NV highway patrol, and Vegas PD all use.

I got my R8 for around $550 and it was worth every damn penny IMO. I'd say this R4 for $150 is a great deal.

Just snagged one for 159.1 in roundrock tx. They still had 2 cardboards but the guy who gave the detector said this was the last one.

Is Valentine One still the gold standard
Debatable. The Uniden R7/R8s are probably better. Also, since Mike Valentine died the future of Valentine Research is iffy.

At the end of the day the answer is it depends.

However, this R4 if you can get it is a VERY GOOD DEAL.

Are there still updates? I don't think I've seen any in years. Can you provide link please!
yes, and also there are some custom firmwares available for the R7s I believe as well which are in active development

Common sense would dictate that if you're getting a hit for more than a mile or two, the threat is behind you. But, yeah..go ahead and drive 20 miles clueless because you don't have an arrow.
Horn in the front. Common sense dictates signal strength goes up it's in front of you since you know horns in the front. I agree about the arrows helping but for $144 it's a spare and or small carryon detector etc. I run R7s btw but have a R4 as a spare or when I take the work van to certain states etc and have a long drive.

Damn you. Indeed, they are out. Looked like the only one in the area is Harker Heights and they had one (in her handheld)— ironically the first place I ever got a speeding ticket, 25+ years ago 🤣

I've had an R3 for almost 5 yrs. About a couple months ago, for the FIRST AND ONLY TIME EVER, the LASER alert got triggered. Thankfully, I wasn't speeding... and I could see the cop car ahead, in a place where they always park and watch traffic.

This time the LEO (County Sherriff - Florida) was hanging out of his window pointing the laser at me and he fired it off like 3 times, and I got 3 warnings. I was the only vehicle on the road at the moment on a sunny afternoon. Absolutely NO WAY I would have been able to slow down in time... which is what I've heard... by the time you get a laser warning, it's too late.

Anyway, I think the County may have been "testing" the laser unit to see if if it was worth their while to upgrade the Ka radar they currently use, as it's been at least a couple months, and I haven't had any other laser hits.
