If that's the case, I don't see what the point of this is when a backpack does the same thing, but is much more durable, has more capacity, and more compartments.

For the question of why not a backpack? This is lighter weight and takes up less room than the most. The straps, while they would hurt if you put a on of weight in it, also are nice that they aren't wide and leave sweat marks when it is hot out. We took it to a theme park and it was helpful and a backpack would have been too big.

MLB seems to be different.Citifield says and shows you can bring a drawstring bag/sackbag/cinchbag but they don't want any compartments on it.

I can clearly remember going into an MLB game with someone who had a drawstring bag (no zipper compartments). So it looks like that is still true. The NFL is real strict though. Probably because NFL stadiums can be massive. Some are 80,000+ fans vs 40,000+ at an MLB game. So going through bags is a big time waste for everyone trying to get into the stadium.
