This is an outstanding and versatile day pack (my favorite by far) and $48.50 is a rare price (not the best price ever, but anything under $50 for this pack is worth jumping on if you need one). It's briefly dropped to this price several times in September then popped back up (smells very much like dwindling inventory of discontinued colors).

I borrowed my wife's so often that I got my own. Now I see that Tan Concrete color would be pretty perfect for safari and I'm tempted to buy another just for that purpose.

Things I love about this pack

Super lightweight and well-ventilated
Outstanding quality construction
Comfortable wide shoulder straps with sternum strap
Waist straps available but can be easily tied out of the away if you don't want to use them
Works well as a day pack, work pack, or travel pack (bladder compartment doubles as a laptop compartment)
Super wide handle fits over a rolling luggage handle so it's great in airports and trains (easy to use as the under-seat bag that you strap to the handle of your rolling bag)
20L is an ideal everyday capacity
Osprey Warranty is pretty much the best there is
20l may feel like wearing a large purse on your back. And not offer the storage you occasionally need. All have their own use cases of course
I have two of these - one a couple of years old and one about 7 years old,
Both are sturdy but both have inner pockets that dont take my phones well.
To wear these is awkward if someone is built and/or large.
I'm 6' 1" 240 and wearing one of these looks/feels kinda silly (like a sling bag that fits gals better than guys)
I use these as a hand carry/car bag a lot so I like them.
But fighting to get my Pixel fit into pockets is a drag
The older bag has better dirt/stain resistant outer shell.
Nothing I do makes my old pack dirty but the newer one I have to baby

Just purchased this a week ago at REI for travel (at full price). I wanted something that I could use for my laptop and other small items when flying but would also be a usable for day hikes once I was at a destination. This has been perfect so far for both purposes.

I ordered. It looks like a nice enough bag but if im looking at potentially buying a farpoint soon anyway, will this be redundant with the daypack that comes with the farpoint? Anyone have a better bag in this size to suggest?

is the laptop compartment lifted? ie if you drop the backpack on the ground would the laptop hit the ground, or is there a buffer?

I have the talon and a much older version of this one from 2012. Honestly I use this one much more than the talon. This one is great for solo hikes or quick in and outs. The talon holds a lot more, but I just end up loading it up with a lot of stuff I don't need.

Checked mine. No there's no buffer but it's padded at the base.

There is some basic padding at the base of the laptop slot.
However these packs don't sit well and usually just tip over.
It can even be hard to tell the top from the bottom when rushing.
Lots of times I reach for the pack and stuff falls out because I grabbed pack upside down

Any recommendations for a similar style/size rugged bag that has better protection for a laptop, also with sleeves for bottles?

I would still recommend this one, just buy a good laptop sleeve (e.g. TomToc) for it. A 14" laptop with a sleeve should fit without any issues.

It's safe enough for 13-14" laptop. The pad is pretty robust. Or you can just add a piece of foam at the base.

Sorry, I don't know other alternative. But this one is one of the better.

There's that Mountain Hardwear 20 or 22L bag. And it's another good one.
