How much do you expect for a non-carrier promotion for a 4-year old base model phone?

AT&T & T-Mobile offer $1K value for iPhone 12 with their premium plans. Many are buying it for trading in with their carrier. Already got a 12 from Metro last deal, which was $50 more.

Keeping my current phones (13 and higher) as spares so I can trade these in instead for less.

If you don't auto-pay or extend service, there is nothing to cancel. You just stop paying. Based on what I have read, device should auto unlock after 12 months from activation and continued service is not required.

Check out the unlock policy link I shared earlier.

Is there any reason why I shouldn't click activate now?
There's no disadvantage in activating early. In fact, if this is not the 1st phone in the account (i.e. you already have one active on hand), the sooner you activate the incoming one the sooner you can order the next one. This was the case with my last account that I was able to order more phones and cheap tablets after the two iPhone 12's. I wanted to order them quickly before the one month of service ran out.

Thank you, I figured it was better to start the activation process early since it can take a few days for numbers from GV and NumberBarn port over.

Unlocked or Locked? Most companies welcome an unlocked phone, although most don't require an unlocked phone.

I've never traded-in phones to AT&T, but info on Reddit says they accept locked phones. I've traded-in locked iPhones to Google Fi and Best Buy without problems.

your story is my story , down to the day. I also clicked activate this evening, but then when it wanted me to log into my new account , it required the phone number, plus the pin i created, PLUS the 2-FA code they just sent to the new phone (which is on a UPS truck until tomorrow). At least it's active now I guess?

When the account is deleted, will the SIM card number or ICCID number be also released too? I know the IMEI number of the phone will be released, but I don't know about the SIM card number.

I decided to go ahead with the activation since I want everything to be ready when I receive the phone so that I can order another phone on a second line. I didn't try to log into my new account since the phone hasn't arrived yet, but I just decided to do a test in NumberBarn. After enabling SMS on the line in NumberBarn (which only took about 2 minutes), I'm able to receive SMS in NumberBarn even though the line is in the process of being ported away. So I guess in theory I could log into my Metro account since I will be able to receive the 2-FA code, but I'm going to wait as I don't want to screw up my account.

PSA: if you're planning to use rsim19 to do the mickey mouse unlock method, DO NOT update to the latest iOS 17.7 (or even iOS 18 for that matter). My rsim19 doesn't work. Idk maybe I got a bunk rsim19. Lol
I was not able to get rsim19 to work on this the iphone 12 from metro but i was able to get mksd 5.6 to work not risking it turning off updates.

Thanks, just read up on short code messages and why NumberBarn may not be able to receive them.

The pSIM will be deactivated and can be reused. The eSIM will be deactivated as well, but I always deleted it before selling or trading in.
