You can call Metro or you can do it yourself. Log into your account using their web site or the MyMetro app. Use the Switch Device function to transfer service to another device (either an inactive Metro phone, or an unlocked phone with an inactive Metro SIM). I did that before selling my Metro Edge 2024. See attachment.
What if it's an unlocked phone without an inactive Metro SIM/eSIM? That might explain why it was erroring-out on me (my unlocked phone has never been on Metro). Thanks

You can use an unlocked phone if it has eSIM capability (Metro will send the link/QR code for you to download the Metro eSIM to it). If it doesn't have eSIM capability, then it must have a physical Metro SIM for Metro to activate it.

Yes, my unlocked phone has eSIM. Thanks!

I finally was able to get that line switched over to my unlocked non-Metro iPhone. Here's a recap:

-tried to do it multiple times online, all resulted in an "Oops something happened" error
-last night I finally decided to call Metro's porting department (800-518-7519), the guy said that there would be a $25 charge but he would try to walk me through the steps to do it myself. There were two options - using the Metro app or online. We started with the Metro app but I suspected this wasn't going to work because AFAIK you can only use the app to switch the device it's installed on (I didn't see a way to view or select other lines in the app). We didn't get very far because the call got disconnected (I have terrible reception and hadn't enabled wi-fi calling). I had to run an errand and by the time I got home the call center was closed
-this morning I called the porting department morning and was advised that there would be a $25 charge, I explained that I tried doing it online several times and wasn't able to. The agent said I could try calling *611 to do the switch myself. I called *611 and it said that for unlocked non-Metro phones I had to visit a Metro store.
-I decided to call the porting department again. I got a different agent and they said they could do the switch for me as a one-time courtesy and that next time I could do it myself online. They told me that the device switch never works online the first time (interesting!). Anyways, they got my device switched over without problem.

Next steps - I need to take a few minutes to process what to do next and in what order (port the number away, try to order another phone).

Thanks again for your help!

In August, I had an account with 6 lines (two iPhone 12s, one Moto Edge 2024, one Moto G Stylus 5G 2024, two tablets). I traded-in the two iPhone 12s to Best Buy, didn't bother porting/removing them from the account. I wanted to sell the Edge and Stylus. I switch the Edge to my inactive Metro Moto Razr using its eSIM. I switched the Stylus to a Tracfone-unlocked A51 using an inactive Metro SIM from some time in the past. Did all of that online on the web without problems. Not charged for anything.

Yeah, I'm not sure why I was running into problems. It could also be related to this account not being able to buy anymore discounted devices. I did read somewhere that some accounts have a high security setting enabled that prevents device switching online. I wonder if they are being more strict now, like how they have crack-downed on GV/NB numbers.

Did you try with the app ? I had similar issue when I tried to switch using browser on laptop. I contacted them, the agent suggested me to use app instead. From the app switching happened very easily. Just install the app where the esim is currently on .

I switched the esim to 3 phones till now in 1 month. So try the app

Thanks for the suggestion. The problem is that I was trying to switch devices from a device that was still sealed in the box. As far as I can tell, the app can only be used to manage the line that is tied to the phone that the app is installed on.

So I ended up porting away the number after switching it to my unlocked phone. I thought I'd try once more to add a line (using a Visible number) but got the "Sorry" error at the very end. Now, almost 5 hours later it's not even letting me add a phone to the cart as it's saying that I'm not eligible to add a new line. Maybe I should've waited until the very last billing date before porting out that number, but I wasn't sure how long the port-out would take and didn't want to risk losing the number.

Using my other account, if I use the same Visible number and click "Check this number", it says "Unfortunately, this number can't be transferred. Try another number or choose a new number to continue.". If I choose a random number, the check passes and it lets me add the phone to the cart. I'll wait a few more hours and see if my Visible number gets released.

*Update* It's been over 48 hrs and that Visible number is still not passing the "Check this number" check. I must've really pissed them off, LOL. Fortunately you can change your number easily with Visible.

Up to a point. Between May 2023 and April 2024, I had 3 accounts at my own address, each for a different person (myself, wife, daughter) and their email, phone number, card. All together, I was able to order 8 phones and two tablets before Metro blocked further orders to my address. One account was able to order 2 phones; one ordered 4 phones; one ordered 2 phones and 2 tablets. Metro is very YMMV.

I think member aabbccbbaa is using his address for his account and his wife's account.
Sorry I just saw this, yes that's right - my wife and I each have accounts (or had - my account is already suspended and my wife's will be soon) using the same mailing/billing address. I was able to buy 2 phones using my wife's account, but only 1 using mine. However, last year I had taken advantage of the free iPhone 11 in-store deal and gotten 2 phones using an account in my name. So I think that's why they would only let me buy 1 phone this time.

You may remember that the iPhone 11 deal last year was right before they shutdown the Metro corporate stores. The rep that helped me was really cool, he did not give me a hard sell with accessories and insurance. He told me that each account was limited to 2 discounted (free) phones, but there was nothing stopping someone from creating multiple accounts using the same name. At the time I was just happy to be able to buy 2 phones and did not try to get more. Looking back I should've gotten more (either by creating another account using my own name or my wife's).

Anyways, today I tried to create another account using my name and same billing/shipping address but a new email, but was denied at the last step of checkout. I was also using cellular data instead of my home wi-fi in case they are tracking ip addresses. I just tried again using the same address except that I specified a unit number, and this time it went through! It looks like changing both the mailing address and email address did the trick. By the way, this time I got the iPhone 13 - we will use it as a travel phone as it's the last US iPhone that supports physical SIM. I'm hoping that I can get at least one more after this one is activated.

When you specify the unit number, how does metro validate against the USPS address, did you face any difficulty with the UPS delivery because of the Unit # (most probably you haven't received yet)

It appears that Metro does not do any validation of the unit number. I was able to order at least two phones using this "trick". And there were no issues with UPS delivery.

Nope, mine is still locked. My order on 10/17, which was to activate on 10/22, did not unlock. I have been checking every day since 04/22. I'm guessing the 1-year policy applies.
