FWIW, there are people that willing to buy any used enterprise grade drive at discount and there are people that will not take such risk. It's all up to their judgement. But let me make it clear about something. I bought some of these before from gHD via ebay and I will say that the description mention on the NewEgg is much more vague than the on on ebay. And thus I wouldn't buy it. Again, I have bought these kind of drive before and I'm not against the idea, but the thing here is the refurbish item on newegg doesn't specify the grade or condition of the drive other than it's being refurbished. On the other hand, if you shop gHD via ebay, the description is much more clear. It would either tell you that it has been wiped and clear the manufacturer diagnostic software with zero bad sector and come with 5 years seller warranty or some other condition like it's B-grade drive with some bad sector between 1 & 100 and come with 3 years warranty. But at least on ebay the description is clear. Here, I just don't know and I wouldn't gamble myself on B-grade drive. In addition to the fact that you will see this drive about $74-75 on gHD via ebay often, it's not that big of a deal. And even if it's not, it's normally at $80 anyway for A-grade w/ zero bad sector. So, no big loss there.

PS: OP mentioned it's 5 years warranty, but I don't see that anyway on the NewEgg listing.
PS: It seem since I originally posted this, some more text and picture have been added to clarify that this drive come w/ 5 years warranty and the drive come w/ zero bad sector which is considered A-grade drive. Still when you buy used enterprise grade, test it yourself first before putting them in use. And as for used non-enterprise drive I, wouldn't buy them.

I got 5 from last deal for NAS. the packaging is top notch with probably the best shipping protection i have ever seen.
that said, those HDD are loud, i have maybe 7 different brand and models of 3.5HDD in my systems from HGST, WD, Seagate.. those are the loudest by far. they also has the 3.3V interfaces so unless you use it for NAS purpose, you need to use the included Molex adapter (maybe some MB has the 3.3V signal out? my didn't), so it is somewhat not ideal if you intent to use on a desktop.

The 3.3v issue doesn't really have anything to do with the MB. It's about the power supply changes to the ATX standard that aren't backwards compatible. That's why the fix is a power supply adapter cable. The original standard had 3.3v power on the pin. They later revised it to use that pin as a power signal. Any high voltage turns the drive off so a drive following the new standard with the disable feature used with an older power supply simply never turns on. A molex power connector doesn't have a 3.3v power source so the pin in question isn't connected to anything so the drive works fine.

Any idea if this would work natively with a USB docking station? Something like this:

I do have a spare NAS (DS216+II) so I could format and make it work from the sound of it, but I'd really like these drives plug-and-play as long-term cold storage.

I got 5 from last deal for NAS. the packaging is top notch with probably the best shipping protection i have ever seen.
that said, those HDD are loud, i have maybe 7 different brand and models of 3.5HDD in my systems from HGST, WD, Seagate.. those are the loudest by far. they also has the 3.3V interfaces so unless you use it for NAS purpose, you need to use the included Molex adapter (maybe some MB has the 3.3V signal out? my didn't), so it is somewhat not ideal if you intent to use on a desktop.

I think this is what i bought as well the 14tb ver. And ppl are not joking when they say this loud. Not only loud, mine literally thumps and vibrates like a mini earthquake when this thing be active.

I have the Seagate Exos X14 12TB ones from ServerPartDeals when they were at $105 and deal back then. Built a TrueNAS out of it with 2 of them. Pretty with it so far. Noise is low from the drive alone but I have fans to keep it cool, so it turns out to be loud either way. But I don't run it 24/7, only when I need it.

Can we assume that pretty much any DIY NAS enclosure with the slide in bays should work fine with these drives?

Yes, it should work with most. I've used this exact model successfully with at least 3 USB docks.
