Serving sizes very hugely between brands. Some serving sizes may only be 1/3 or 1/2 a cup where other brands are more realistic at 1 cup or more. So that 12 servings may be 36-48 servings of a different brand.
Survival buckets usually use small servings because they're marketed as minimum size needed for emergencies. Hiking brands are geared more towards portion size to fuel a long hike.

For the fruit and veggies bucket, it's only 3,300 calories per bucket. So a day and a half of the energy you need. This is really to supplement an already existing stockpile or emergency food supply with something akin to 200 calorie snack bags to 'mix things up' and get some fiber in. Still, I prefer packaging my own emergency food. Raw ingredients (sugar, salt, spices, pasta, beans, oats, dried fruits, dried milk, sugar, etc etc) in mylar bags or canning jars. Much more economical

These are very carb heavy. I prefer Mountain House. They have actual protein (as in real meat) and tastes better IMO.

Do you guys open the bucket to check the stuff isn't damaged or leave them sealed?

Just checked out the Mountain House website. made me hungry 😂

the closest thing I could find to compare to this was their weekender pack 6 pouches /12 servings for $44

So there's that..

I refer to some of the cheap 30 day supply buckets as 'mush bucket'. Not pleasant, but something to keep you alive. If I were relying on them then I'd supplement my supplies with dry beans or something for protein.

Agreed, I consider 'serving' a meaningless unit. I mostly compare carb-heavy meals by calories. Fruits/vegetables and proteins are usually a more targeted interest, so I can just compare price vs weight.

Yes there's a reason Mountain House is almost 3x more expensive. If I want my kids to eat freeze dry food without making a scene I would definitely go with MH.

The 120 serving bucket might actually cheaper per "serving" on Amazon.

Yes, I got a bucket of meat from them during the pandemic and one of the inside bags had a penetration. They gave me a pro rated refund.

That was just a quick starter to my emergency supply and offset for variety as Eric stated. I just have a old fashioned bunker style supply of perishables in the basement now. Great to have a weeks supply of things on hand and great when you run out of something but don't want to run to the store. Pluck on out of supply, replace it later, and consider it a healthy rotation of fresh stuff I to the supply.

Yeah, Mountain House used to be pretty affordable pre-pandemic. We are talking $50-60 bucks for a similar bucket when on sale. Last time I got a bucket off Amazon for $59.99 back in 2017 (essential bucket). I think Costco had a sale for Mountain House's 3 day emergency meal box for less than $50 around that time too. Check older deals that were posted here back then for more info.

But yeah, everything is so much more expensive nowadays but to me Mountain House remains the gold standard for these types of ready to eat hiking/camping meals. They haven't messed up much of their quality so far.

Their stroganoff pouches are my favorite
