For $50 more, Costco has a better version with 14th gen intel HX, double the ram of this, and a numpad. Their sale ends 10/6/24. I think the bestbuy has a little faster processor (44,000 score for multithreading vs 37,000 for Costco's) but single thread score is comparable.

Thanks for bringing up the Costco version. Double the ram is nice. One thing that wouldn't work for it so the Costco version only has one Tb4 port.

Not a huge fan of a 4060 for $1,000- but at least all the specs mostly make sense (CPU is overkill for the GPU) and they didn't try to pair a 1440p or higher screen with a 1080p GPU so you might actually be able to get a lot out of that 165hz screen. Most modern games you're still probably going to only be hitting up to 120 FPS with DLSS and/or Frame Generation though.

The Dell 7420 is an apple, and this HP is an orange. There couldn't be less in common between the two. Maybe your question was a joke?

Thoughts on the I9 vs the I7 in the costco version?

If you're gaming, the GPU will limit the framerate. They could put an i5 in this laptop and you'd still get the same FPS in most games.

This i9 is more suited for a mobile RTX 4090, for a 4060 it's massive overkill.

Also, both of those CPU models have 8 "P-cores". The i9 has 16 "e-cores", while the i7 has 8 "e-cores". efficiency cores are useless for gaming, so the higher core count doesn't mean much. In fact, Asus recommends disabling all the e-cores to reduce power consumption and heat.

For that matter, given the recent Intel issues with 13th and 14th gen CPUs killing themselves, the slightly(0.2ghz) lower maximum single core boost speed of the i7 might help to keep your CPU from dying. And the i7 does have a higher all-core boost speed(4.9ghz vs 4.5ghz).

The extra RAM in the Costco model, on the other hand, will make a very noticeable difference.

I game this labtop and it's fast but screen isn't bright and when you use that 4060 expect to hear the fan. Also gets a little hot if you are using the power. But it charges thru USB c but can't use to fully power the computer with gpu.

The HX series of CPU are desktop class, meaning they are susceptible to the intel overvoltage/degradation issues [huge failure rate for 14900/13900 issue you may have seen]. Watch your warranty and if you see any stability issues, RMA/Warranty it. Also update the microcode/bios immediately to prevent degradation.
