These cameras and the TP Link outdoor are honestly best value. Yes they are not state of the art like those advanced systems that are connected with alarm systems. But anyone can put these up and they offer me a sense of safety and security for my home and family without breaking the bank. I recommend getting a decent size micro SD and set it to continuous loop recording always. It should always have approximately 25 days of recording available which is plenty. Also there is a feature for cloud storage for a monthly subscription. I believe first month is free trial so you can test it to see if you like the features.

Which wyze cameras do you use? I just need something for my driveway
Please don't use Wyze for anything. They have proven time and again they do not care about protecting your privacy, even leaving databases completely unsecured for people to harvest all of their user's data on multiple occasions. They also regularly change subscription costs/models and their services often just do not work at all or break without warning. They have even shipped their robot vacuums with known bricked firmware to customers and had customers report being able to view other customers camera feeds. Truly the worst of the worst when it comes to these inexpensive IOT companies.

I have had these installed outside for 2+ years. The one on the front porch is set to motion detect primarily, while the other one is set to stationary at the back entrance. It was a twin pack.

The front door is set to motion detect as it covers the road, parked cars and porch. The back door covers the patio and alley mainly. They're both protected by the rain and snow, unless it's sideways. The one set to motion detect needs reset every so often and if I wanted, I could do that every few days because of home position creep occurs every few days by a tad bit.

I also have 1 stationary cam model of the same brand. They all do fine recording to SD cards and stay connected to WiFi pretty well.

They've helped detect endearing family moments on the porch and critters making noises with our trash cans. Found out how the bird bath got broken, why my FedEx package 📦 was rolling in the ground (he fell out of the back of the box truck 🤕) and my sister telling her son she loves him before sending him off to the military and my brother quizzing his teenage son 5:30 in morning hunter safety and readiness actions with the muzzleloader.

Worth every penny these things are. The app works pretty well and is integrated with their other products, like lights. Have them connected with Alexa. Paid I think the same as this during Amazon lightning deals.
Which city or state you are in? Just wondering how cold your winter is. Thanks.

  • Night monitoring is great, but the camera does display a red light constantly (unclear why, as infrared is not visible).
LEDs do not put out just one frequency of light, there is some roll-off into surrounding frequencies (picture a bell curve). A lot of infrared LEDs are very bright in the infrared spectrum still produce dim visible light. Fortunately, the Tapo cameras don't need much light. If you have even a small amount of ambient light in the room then you should be able to put it in day mode, which disables the LED and you wont see the red light. To do this tap the "Auto" text on the video feed in the app and then select "Day Mode". I did this on a camera that covers our driveway and the picture is clear even at night thanks to a street light down the street.

The upper region in SW Indiana zone 6a

The front porch cam is the only one really vulnerable as we get west wind rain weather. It's far enough back from the north edge of the porch to get too much from our winter north elements.

It's a traditional bungalow porch style. The cam is on the west side of the porch to be able to rotate and view the west side yard and all the way to the backyard on the west side of the house. The west side of the house is completely cleared of trees and buildings for the rest of the block. The house is located in the second lot of the block from the east, with 3-4 lots west of it that have been cleared for yard space.

So, the west side cam gets plenty of exposure but the overhang tends to protect it enough.

Since I have it to motion detect, I turn it off motion detect when it gets super windy to protect the motor. I've found it is sensitive to detecting a lot of movements since it's outside. I leave all the alerts off on my cams. Porch flags will drive it nuts.

I can't speak for the Tapo C210, but I recently purchased the Tapo C211 for use as a baby monitor, which may be the black version of the latest hardware. If so, I've found that there's a lot of misleading information in this thread.

According to the Tapo website https://www.tapo.com/us/product/s...tapo-c211/ , which offers the black version for $35 for two:
  • Adding an SD card does NOT require a cloud subscription. From my router, it appears that no data is sent during video tracking/recording.
  • The camera supports up to 0.5 TB SD cards.
  • It features motion tracking, human tracking, and baby crying detection.
  • Unlike Kasa, Tapo does support local streaming to NAS https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/2680/ .
  • On Google Home/Chromecast, you can say "Show my Nursery Camera" to stream for 5 minutes https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/2739/ .
  • On a tablet or phone (on the same WiFi network SSID), you can open the Tapo app and stream continually. When away from home, streaming is limited to 5 minutes.
  • Night monitoring is great, but the camera does display a red light constantly (unclear why, as infrared is not visible).
  • Cry detection sends a notification to the phone, which can be customized in Android settings to play a longer or louder sound.
  • Although you can share the device with multiple Tapo accounts, only the main account receives notifications. To receive notifications on multiple devices, you must sign in with the same account on each device.
  • The camera is "wireless" in that it's WiFi-enabled, but it does require being plugged into power via a circular plug (not USB). I wish it were easier to connect to an external battery for on-the-go monitoring.
  • I believe this camera was rated as the best baby monitor by a reputable reviewer (possibly Consumer Reports), but I couldn't find the review again.
  • I've been using the camera for 2 weeks, so I can't vouch for its longevity. However, I've been impressed with TP-Link's quality in their other products.
  • The Tapo and Kasa brands seem to differ mainly in their approach to privacy, with Tapo focusing on local compute/storage.
  • With an SD card, you can save unlimited footage to your PC or mobile device.
  • The power cord is approximately 10 ft long (although I didn't measure it).
  • You can enable "Voice Notifications" in Google Home, which should notify you of motion/cries, etc. via broadcast. However, I was only able to get these notifications to work on a Google Home Mini, not other devices.
  • I paid more for a 0.5 TB SD card https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09R9B9XCJ , which was unnecessary in hindsight.
Overall, I've been very happy with my purchase so far... YMMV.
Good info but shared accounts do get notifications. I get notifications on a shared camera that is a different Tapo model.

I currently have the Geeni Sentinel 1080p Pan & Tilt Camera [mygeeni.com] and it constantly disconnects and is a real pain to reconnect. Are these cameras better & more reliable?

I also have had the Kasa TP-Link version mounted outside. It was marketed as an indoor baby or pet monitor. I am in Michigan and it has worked well through two winters. I have also installed the Kasa ones for a neighbor indoors and she has had no issues with them. Tapo now has an outdoor pan and scan which I have installed two for a neighbor and they work quite well.

Not sure why someone said they don't motion track - they absolutely do. I have a bunch of Ring cameras and for the money these Kasa and Tapo camera's video quality beat them hands down. Ring really needs to step up their game before I consider purchasing anymore of their cameras.

These TAPO ones (indoor use) are another story, though I'm not entirely convinced it is a manufacturing fault. I recommended them to a non-tech neighbor for his garage. I'm afraid he has mechanically manipulated the camera causing eventual issues. The first one he had, while performing the boot up sequence rotating clockwise would lose power. If nudged, it would start the process all over again - restoring power and cycling the camera.Camera still works but has to be prevented from rotating clockwise during initialization. Dealing with the manufacturer for warranty was a headache so we gave up and he bought another one. That one seems to be operating fine.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

Evaluating this from their documentation [tapo.com], I find no USB connection at all (contrary to earlier posts here and doc boilerplate that's not applicable), NTM a minimum operating temp of only 32°F. (Might work at -10°F, but might break lol.)

By contrast, the C120, though fixed, allows both power and data via USB, which makes it possible to avoid use of the onboard wireless by connecting directly to router (USB) or other LAN client.

Other comment: Many here don't realize that with streaming, the SD card slot need not be used. The video can be captured to your preferred giant (or any size) storage media attached to whichever LAN-connected device one prefers. Example using ffmpeg with low resolution stream to view only:

Code:
ffplay -rtsp_transport tcp rtsp://NAME:[email protected]:554/stream2
Change name, password and IP (192.168...) to yours, leave the port at 554, and use "stream1" instead of "stream2" for high-resolution if desired.

Capture to file is similar. The stream can also be preprocessed for motion and audio (apart from the app) so that recording only happens when there's something to record. All free.

Will not stream using Google home app

Only to Google hub screens and will turn off after 10 min. Not fully Google compatible because of this issue.
I am returning mine to amazon and buying something else during prime day, if something goes on sale.
Camera is good for the money but not being compatible with home app. Tappo app is good no complaints . I like seeing all my cameras at once . Perhaps a Nas docker would work . Not going to bother with it
