Note that the previous thread on this has a massive amount of technical discussion about practically every aspect of this router and detailed setup instructions etc. If looking for answers, I'd start with a search in that thread (terms like OpenWRT, DD-WRT, stock, CA, mesh, USB, throughput, wired, backhaul, bricked, etc). That may be a good start for those new to it, as it probably already answers a lot of questions that are sure to crop up.

Also, here's a link to some of the basic support docs for it from the Linksys site …

For a single level home, I don't have a problem with signal using my AC1700. Why do I need to switch to this ?
The only item I'm looking for is some kind of parental control that's built into the router that blocks some apps and websites like YouTube across multiple device types.

There's a reason why these are so cheap. Garbage router brand, riddled with security holes/flaws. Inflation is so high the cheapest shipping method is like $10+. Basically selling this for a loss. 😂
mind sharing your list of security vulnerabilities on this model?

if not, SHUDDAP

I would generally advise against buying something that you don't think you need

Agreed hence the question since I don't quite understand how this router improves the usage - speed or otherwise for a general family, mainly browsing and streaming.
The only item I'm lacking right now is good parental controls, which isn't advertised or discussed anywhere for this router.

is it a reasonable assumption that everyone buying multiple units lives in mansions?
Keep in mind that using the 5.8 GHz band increases the possible throughput … but that frequency doesn't travel as far as 2.4 GHz or handle obstructions as well. Someone in the previous thread reported that they saw awesome speed when testing, but it started dropping off after getting just 10 feet away from the router. So while people may still be able to get a connection throughout their house, they may not be getting the full potential speed out of it without multiple units for a strong 5.8 GHz signal everywhere. Back when everyone was using 2.4 GHz routers and internet connections weren't as fast as they are today, multiple units in a small house would have been pointless … but it can help for someone really trying to eke out every bit of speed now that some people have 1 Gbps internet connections. (By the way … I'm not at all suggesting that most people would need a bunch of these in a small house … the average person would probably never fully use that kind of speed anyway.)

My question, do you need speed increase and having wifi6 devices?

The answer is no, keep yours ac1700

Try the DNS level solutions, like NextDNS, etc.

Well, to me the worst comment of the day\week\month\year\decade is the one stickied on the wiki: If you use a 3rd party firmware (DDWRT or OpenWRT) modified to work on this unit, you have no idea what this person might have added/subtracted to this firmware while modifying it to work on this unit.

LMAO

It's a joke what some of these guys think about open source. smh
Ask them how many public eyes are on TPLink's firmware (none) versus DDWRT/OPENWRT (probably thousands, including yours if you know what you're doing). Truly don't understand.

The parental controls documentation was listed a few pages back, although that's not really going to be a reason to get this … just something that's available if someone is using it anyway. Here's the link again …

Set up a mesh system of 6 units. Speed and range are very good but unfortunately my many Wyze cams didn't stream well with the mesh system.

Mesh instruction from slickdeals page comment:

1-Setup your Main router completely.

2-Plug your child node using the wan port to the main router lan port, wait for a solid purple light on the child node before proceeding

3-Log into your main router web admin.

4-Click on CA at the bottom right.

5-Click on Connectivity and CA Router setup.

6-Click on both Add Wired and Add Wireless nodes buttons. Wait for the Add wireless button to re-enable.

7-Click Done adding Child Nodes and then Apply.

8-Now the child node light should start flashing purple and turn into a mesh mode when it turns blue.

9-Disconnect Ethernet and wait for blue light again.

10-Move node to desired location
