You don't have to worry about ceiling joist placement with these lights, as they are less than 1/2" thick.

So, you cut your 6.25" hole, and even if there is a joist, the light disk fits beneath it (because the drywall is 1/2 or 5/8" thick)

There are a bunch of lighting calculators online to help determine spacing.

Man, the price keeps going down on this. I remodeled my whole house and bought 80 of them a couple years ago. They have worked perfectly and not one has failed.

When you are doing the whole house, it is not that many. You put in 12 for kitchen/breakfast, 8 for family rooms, and the various rooms, it adds up.

I actually might have gone overboard in some rooms as it is too bright, so I use my KASA smart switches to dim the light every night.

I only wish we could switch the temperature on them but I believe only Hue has those and I am not paying 40 bucks a light.

These were $150 under my Amazon Business Account (usually stuff is cheaper by a little bit). I love these type of lights, especially for remodel work. It doesn't matter if a joist is in the way - the lights are so thin, it just needs the ears to hold them tight against the drywall. The color switch is nice too. I have a hole saw adapter for a rotozip, which makes them easier to install than a regular drill hole saw.

The diameter of the lighted part - the hole requirement is 4-1/8 and 6-1/4 for those.

Lutron dimmers are junk. I use tplink kasa smart dimmers with these lights. Though the Amico product page says "Dont use smart dimmers", these kasa ones works amazingly well with these recessed lights. I changed all the recessed lights in my last house and now in process of changing them at my new house too! They are very sturdy and quality products.

I've had no problems using the Zooz Zen switches with these also.

I have over 30 kasa switches powering all the recessed lights. All of them have dimmers and some of them are motion sensors activated also.

I have 1 failure in 2+ years for the Kasa switches and zero on the recess lights.

I put the 4-inch outdoor on the soffit and they look very nice.
