You may have to consider the opportunity cost of keeping the account open to avoid the early close-out fee. Putting $2,500 into a 5% high yields savings account nets $125 in a year or $61.5 in 6 months. On the other hand, to avoid the early close-out fee, you would have to keep $2,500 in a 0.01% APY checkings account for 6 months (180 days) but this would overall save you $64.95 by not having to pay the first monthly fee ($14.95) and pay the close-out fee ($50). If you have a higher yield savings account, it would be better to just pay the monthly fee and pay the close-out fee.

Edit: From what I've seen online, the first month's fee is waived and you can downgrade your account to the EZChoice plan so that you don't have to pay monthly fees and so you don't have to keep $2,500 in the account. I outlined this in my second comment: https://slickdeals.net/f/17778438-m-t-bank-checking-account-open-account-direct-deposit-1000-within-90-days-earn-500-cash-bonus-valid-in-select-states-thru-10-25?p=173029269#post173029269

As for tax calculations, (for a general rule of thumb) if you make more than $44,726, that puts you into the 22% tax bracket. Since the $500 sign up bonus is considered as taxable income, it will be taxed at 22%. Moreover, state tax also applies. For instance, Maryland State tax is 4.75% for income between $3,000 and $100,000. So after taxes, the $500 becomes $366.75 if you decide to keep the account open and keep $2,500 in the account for that duration. If you decide to pay the monthly fee and pay the early close-out fee you net $301.3.
The days of 5% HYSA are gone after the recent rate cuts, but very valid points and great analysis.

I'm in Pennyslvania. Screwed up and used the $350 promo code instead of the $500. Called to get it fixed. They told me both codes TN ($350) and UC ($500) are "only valid in New England". Weird bank. Not sure what I will do now.
Thanks for messing up and calling in and voiding everyone else application

I think my strategy for this bonus is to keep the direct deposit at $1500 per month to M&T and when DD clears, transfer all of it to my main online bank with the HYS. Lose about 2-3 days of interest gained on that $1500 per month, but that's not too bad. Keep at it for the 6 month duration. Haven't read deeper into account product changes, but it shouldn't change much I think.

There is no need to keep BUT From someone who done a lot of "churning" ( a few thousands per year) I do keep my account open for at least a year with $50-$100 in order to keep our relationship with the banking industry in a better terms
No benefit to having open checking accounts open past any closing fees. There isn't a credit score type deal with checking accounts and banks.

How did you check this? Did you go to sign up and then it told you or did you go to the link posted earlier to check your zip code?

https://slickdeals.net/click?sdtid=17778438&sdpid=173043426&sdfid=9&lno=1&trd=https%20www%20mtb%20com%20personal%20pers%20&pv=&au=&u3=MzilmotG8E4A1xgrNKWEMCwFzdBz1fmkXs0dWY-ck9IlOCT_L8j-BWwBH0GLwgyC3faRs3ML9vwBl8kVd589p8DKsb56FGw0nOHW7ldKQrc2o5rD5DLqbiSM1RKl5t88RA

Edit: forget the link above. It means nothing because while it will show what accounts are available to be opened in your zipe code, when you actually go to apply it will say your state is unsupported and not a available to be opened.

Quote from EfficientArm1742 :
This is the rundown for the $500 sign up bonus for M&T Bank with a $50 visa giftcard. (Offer available until October 25th)
* Sign up to ReferLive (this is NOT signing up for a checkings account) via a referral link to get a $50 visa giftcard (this is mine's): https://io.referlive.com/GI8gg0
* Click on the promotional link (https://campaigns.mtb.com/500bonus) and sign up for a MyChoice Plus Checkings account. It may prompt you for a promo code. Use code UC.
* The MyChoice Plus Checkings account should have the first monthly fee waived. You need to fund the account with $25 minimum.
* Once you register for the checkings account use a "qualifying direct deposit" and have your deposit(s) amount to $1000 minimum within 90 days.
* Users online have reported that some electronic transfers and bank transfers can qualify. Some users have reported success with getting the bonus by transferring funds from Robinhood, Cash App, Fidelity, Capital One and more.
* Once you have "direct deposited" aka transferred funds from, say, Cash App, you should get the bonus within a couple of days. Users online have reported getting the payout within 2-3 days. Some have reported it taking longer, for instance, a month. The maximum length it'll take is 90 days as written in the fine print.
* If you got the payout quickly, you can downgrade your account to the EZChoice checkings account so that you don't have to pay a monthly fee. If you didn't get the payout quickly then you have to keep it on your current plan (and if your payout isn't within the first month then you have to pay the second month's fee).
* Close the account after 180 days to avoid the early closing fee of $50. Or you can keep the account.
* The $500 is considered taxable income so you will have to pay state and federal income tax on it. File the tax form the bank gives you. It will be either a 1099-Misc or a 1099-Int. If you did not get a form add it to your 1040.
This promo runs regularly every 1-2 months. In the fine print it states you can't get a bonus if you had a account within the past year. So you can do this again the next year on the day you closed your account. This is called "churning".

Edit: You have to use the exact same information that you used in ReferLive for M&T Bank in order to get the $50 giftcard. They will crossmatch the information between ReferLive and M&T Bank and that's how they know whether it's a successful referral. If I recall correctly, the link is not a tracking link. Moreover, you will have to pay taxes on the $50 visa giftcard because it is considered a gift certificate of cash. You will have to add it as additional income under your 1040 tax form.
Thanks for taking the time to write all this up. But just to clarify, have you or anyone else you know of online already received their $500 bonus when they did the Refer a Friends program as well?

Just don't want to put the $500 bonus at risk for a measly extra 10%.

Hi, they will stack as stated in the fine print:

"Cash bonus offers are not available to customers who have already received a bonus credited to a personal M&T checking account within the last 12 months (Refer Friends Program is excluded from this 12-month period)."

Regardless of whether those two promos indeed stack or not, the sentence you quoted does not mean they will stack those promos. It just merely means that the referral bonus you received in the past year doesn't make you ineligible for this cash bonus.

Yeah I read that too, and agree they should stack, but I want to know if anyone has already successfully done it.

Yes it does stack. A lot of people have gotten their gift cards doing this promotion in the past. See this comment [doctorofcredit.com] and this comment [doctorofcredit.com]. Usually someone gives you a referral link and you sign up for a bank account using that referral link. But in this case, there is no referral link. You sign up to ReferLive and they will check to see if that information you used to sign up is the same information you used to sign up for M&T. These processes don't intermingle with each other.

Yes, people have done it successfully. There should be no reason why these promotions would cancel each other out. The processes of these promotions are entirely separate. When you click the referral link, you are signing up to ReferLive not M&T. Then when you sign up to M&T they check to see if you used the same information you used for ReferLive. When the information matches, ReferLive sends you the $50 giftcard not M&T. ReferLive is just partnered with a bunch of banks and M&T is included.

Transferring money from an [C*] app to M&T is locking me out of the account at M&T and returning a error with the [C*]app ? Anyone else have this problem, think M&T does not want cash deposits. So I called M&T customer service and was able to log back in and did a transfer in from my other bank as a bank to bank and it went thru.
And now even bank to bank is not available !!!
