As for if it "works," it's half the battle. You really want finasteride and minoxidil to attack the problem both preventing future hair-loss while stimulating hair follicles.
The combination of those two is very effective at maintaining your hair, stopping hair-loss from continuing and getting worse. It's effective for like 80% of the people who use both.
Regrowing hair in bald spots is harder and less common. Especially if its long dead hair follicles, those don't really come back to regrow hair. But thinning hair areas can become thicker.

I've been using minoxidil foam from costco.
I used to apply twice a day, but brought it down to just once a day.
You will definitely grow unwanted hair where ever it gets to. I have thicker knuckle hair and my eyebrows are more bushy.
