Holiday is around the corner, I would wait for Dell AMEX offers, hope $120/$600 will come, to save $240. I believe Lenovo Amex offer is getting worse, it used to be like $100/$500.

Got this with the 4060, 16gb ram. Was on sale at $799, used 10% coupon, $100 off $500 Amex offer, and cash back site. Total was less than $600 after taxes

For those with laptops and dock in - what dock do you use? I vaguely recall that some docks act as "video cards" and games don't end up using the actual graphics card to play.

Note - the last time I did this was like 5/10 years ago so I'm sure with the advent of faster USB3, this shouldnt be a problem today, but figured I'd still ask.

Is this comparable to an Alienware? My son wants an Alienware for gaming, how is this better or worse?
For a less snarky reply, it depends on the kid. This is an excellent laptop for the price. But it's not Alienware brand and so if your kid wants that brand, then it doesn't matter if it's better or not. For example, my kid would rather have an iPhone 12 instead of the new pixel 9 or new Samsung. So a better phone does matter, they just want the brand.

If I don't care about weight, would you say this deal, or the Lenovo is better?

I do care about cooling though as my current laptop seems to struggle with that.

Is this strong enough as a gaming computer? (assuming I do want a laptop so it can be taken to be used away from home)

Absolutely, the RTX 4070 is an excellent graphics card that will be able to run nearly any game at a minimum of 60fps with high settings, particularly with upscaling technologies like DLSS being used in games. Just that alone can nearly double the framerate in many games depending on the setting used. Long story short, if you want a laptop for gaming, this will be more than satisfactory for that.

I purchased one when it was on sale at the same price in July. It's a beast but the power adapter is big and heavy as a brick. Dell offered tax-free to us, military personnel serving overseas and shipping fee was also free, so it was helpful.

This is a heavy laptop so I have it sit in my barrack. I also have a Minisforum V3 which I travel with. You might use this laptop for workouts on shoulders or biceps if you carry it around.

Dells that are not business class are pieces of shit. I guess that is most brands so consumer grade is not worth it.
