In the end, BBE was taking up too much space on the countertop, so I replaced it with a gaggia classic pro and added PID.
2.5 years later, I'm still happy with GCP.

A burr grinder like the DF64 or DF54 is what you want. Or a Sette 270 or 270wi, or a Niche.
Barista Express are for those who are more experience and but want more control over their espresso.
Honestly for me, I went with the Barista Express because there was a better deal on the Express.

There's a YouTube channel called Hoon's Coffee, and he is a huge Breville enthusiast. He's got all kinds of other machines and grinders, and thinks the Barista Express and Barista Pro are the best for the money… though he usually likes using a different grinder, the built-in grinder will get you going.

Where is the sweet spot in their line-up? I don't want to drop a grand, and though I had sold myself on ~$500, I could meet you in the middle if there is a standout unit that balances costs and palatable pulls.
I like the thought of just pushing a button on an automatic unit, but I am willing to put in the work to get a great espresso/cup of coffee, so now looking at a Breville.
Tried all the gizmos - wdt, bottomless, better tamp, fresh beans etc. I think the grinder is the weak link here and I just got frustrated and put mine away and collecting dust. A shame bc most have good success with it. If I ever get back into it ill get a bambino plus and a better grinder someday but im back to my nespresso(yuk) and aeropress.

Once you've found your perfect espresso bean (used Lavazza for the last two years but recently switched to a local roast) you are set. It takes a li'l fiddling w/ the settings to get it just right by +/-coffee amount and fine/coarse on grinder.

Was a refurbished with a manufacture date of 8/23. Still had the blue plastic film on it. Works great. Push the button twice and I have a perfect double shot in 30 seconds.
