This is a very important product to carry in the woods.

The National Park Rangers are advising hikers in Glacier National Park and other Rocky Mountain parks to be alert for bears and take extra precautions to avoid an encounter.

They advise park visitors to wear little bells on their clothes so they make noise when hiking. The bell noise allows bears to hear them coming from a distance and not be startled by a hiker accidentally sneaking up on them. This might cause a bear to charge.

Visitors should also carry a pepper spray can just in case a bear is encountered. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and it will run away.

It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for fresh bear scat so you have an idea if bears are in the area. People should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat.
Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, and possibly bits of fur. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper.

This is the most oddly specific niche product I think I have ever seen... in for one!

"I was just thinking the other day that I need to pick up a bear bell."

I actually got two, one for each of my two fence doors. I leave them creaky on purpose but a lil extra noise for $5 can't hurt.

Noted. So grizzly will just come eat you, your bells, and your pepper spray

And the next person can recognize a grizzly is around because his scat will have bits of your bones in it... along with bits of this bell.

Can I use the bell silencer on those annoying Salvation Army bells that people ring outside Walmart during the holidays?

If you can get close enough and attach a strong yet small magnet.

Why not do both ? You cannot keep yelling and clapping throughout your hike

This is such a helpful post. My guess is these are "better than nothing" in that sure there are some circumstances that they may help you in, but knowing that my loud family is probably already unintentionally protecting us is good news. Added to cart then removed when I saw your post and read a few pages on the NPS site you linked. Well done.
