In the end I decided that if the price difference was roughly $300usd it was an absolute no-brained if only for the extra vram probably extending the laptop's useful lifespan. As that price differential over the 4080 extends closer to ~$400 it became much more questionable.
If the laptop is to be used for work however, just go all-in and don't compromise haha. Time is money etc and lonely hotel rooms on the road are made easier with some gaming distractions.
