PSU: 310w 80+ Gold

Only slot powered GPUs are recommended, if you're trying to game.

HPs are notorious for their proprietary bs… Doubt you can easily swap out the psu for a more powerful one. At least without an adapter(s).

REMEMBER i5 12400 is cheaper, reliable than i5 14400, dont spend 500$ just get a cheap old 12gen i5, remember 12gen, 13gen, 14gen is the same thing, but worse with newer versions

At least the i5 in this deal isn't affected by the issue with 13th and 14th gen chips. It's only the i5 k/kf chips that have more than 10 cores that are affected by that issue. In this case the 12th gen i5 12400 lacks the 4 E cores that the 14th gen 12400 has 6p vs 6p/4e. It would be similar performance on games or other things that don't have a large number of threads but for heavily multithreaded tasks like your cinebench rendering benchmarks or encoding tasks the 4 extra cores of the 14th gen should put it easily ahead.

This system provides a reasonable value but the trade-off is the incorporation of relatively custom components in the form of an OEM motherboard and power supply.

This power supply is a 12 Volt Only style model. That style distinction is significant since although OEMs have started implementing their own versions of ATX 12VO for cost-savings as well as to meet certain efficiency requirements, what is being sold in OEM systems isn't really standardized in the retail space. So if the power supply needs replacement (outside of warranty) or upgrading, this challenge alone will create some issues well beyond a simple drive to Micro Center.

The motherboard also integrates the front panel connections such as the USB sockets directly onto the motherboard. Though typical for many OEM systems such as others from HP and Dell, this also complicates replacement of the motherboard and/or case.

As such, this recommends at least three possible approaches:
  1. Operate this system as a sealed box with limited to power-neutral upgrades for its lifetime (so only swapping in CPUs or GPUs which are supported within the existing power budget). This works for a large group of users and represents the target audience of this kind of pre-built.
  2. Be the kind of DIY-er who cuts into power supply wires, uses custom power supply wire harnesses, or runs dual power supplies in a PC as part of their GPU upgrade (nothing unimaginable, but definitely a niche group).
  3. Ignore this kind of highly custom OEM system in favor of a PC which utilizes standardized motherboards and power supplies.
Good luck!
Jon

The power supply has a relatively proprietary form factor (size) and the motherboard connectors would recommend the use of an adapter (a non-standardized item usually listed on eBay as an ATX 24 pin to 6P).

The newer (albeit lower-performing) GeForce RTX 3050 6GB model is probably the most powerful, modern GPU you could install in this PC without modification.

Good luck!

Great photos. I repped you for those as they also confirmed the presence of the custom 7-pin PWRCMD connector on the motherboard that comes from the power supply. This is a common feature among HP's proprietary motherboards and power supplies, but I wasn't sure if it existed in this particular model.

Good luck!

Wow, this thing is... interesting. A VGA port in 2024? Who has a VGA-only monitor these days? Put two HDMIs or an HDMI and DisplayPort on there instead. 4x USB 3.2 ports, but ALL of them, and the USB-C port, are on the front? The back USB ports are all USB-A 2.0. And a hard drive? Why? It had to have cost HP more than the difference between the 512 GB SSD that's in it and a 1 TB SSD would have been. And DDR4? Might as well take the only thing that's not an anachronism (the CPU) and starve it for memory bandwidth.

Welcome to the weird world budget OEM computers🤷 where decisions are made 100% purely on the cost and not usability or performance.
