Curious if there's a meaningful leap in hardware/capabilities between the generations? I feel like until they upgrade the backend Alexa service, I experience the same mediocre reliability and performance across my multigenerational fleet.

I have a number of 4th gen Echo Dots and took a look at the 5th gen in this deal - here are the upgrades to the 5th gen (copy/pasted from the listing)
Improved audio experience for clearer vocals, deeper bass, and vibrant sound
Keep your home comfortable by adding your Echo device as a temperature sensor in a routine or with your Amazon Smart Thermostat
eero Built-in – add up to 1,000 sq ft of wifi coverage and support for speeds up to 100 Mbps to a compatible eero network
Nothing compelling enough to make me trade in the 4th gens, which I think I paid $25 for. I imagine the eero coverage could appeal to some with poor WiFi coverage - I have a TP-Link Omada WAP that covers our house very well at far higher than 100 Mbps speeds.
The nice thing about this deal is that you can trade in an echo and use the discount on a tablet.
Unfortunately, there has been some talk about Alexa becoming a paid service. That's enough for me to stop upgrading my echo dots.

They are going to be adding AI. That is why they will start charging. I HOPE it will be optional. Also, you can only get the 20% off on trade in on 1 device/month.

Some echo models dropped the line out in the current generations. So if you have some piped into high end speakers or a stereo you have to look at other options.

The 4th gen already has temp sensor and built-in eero. 🤷 ♂️
