If I were you, I would update it to the latest iOS and try a different Apple store. At the 16 launch, I traded in 3 iPhone 12's (all bought from Metro but at the current 13 price) including one that was sealed and had to be charged on the spot. I didn't experience any issue.
Good luck!
Those of you planning to trade your phones into Apple I would do so soon as Apple often adjusts the trade-in values in January.
Bought and activated an iPhone 12 in January '24. It's still not unlocked. Metro customer service tells me two different stories:
1) the phone will unlock exactly after 12 months even though it was activated BEFORE the T&C changed from 6 months post activation to 12 months.
2) A supervisor gave me some BS story that the phone was never activated even though I have text messages on the phone confirming that the phone was activated. When this information was shared her story changed to "oh you did not USE or service for at least 180 days.
Question: Has anyone experienced this run around? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
TIA!
Ok. Will try this in the AM and report back. Thanks!
Was giving the rep some warning/error at the end (didn't see what it was exactly) and showed $0 value -- he had never seen that before
Well that sucks lol

What promotion are you trading your iPhones for?

No promo, just traded them in at an Apple Store for Apple gift cards ($155 per iPhone 12 and $230 per iPhone 13).
Ah I see. Previously Apple had higher tradein value when you buy an iPhone or even better when you do a promo. (Like around launch or during some deal/ holiday etc)
I have 2x iPhone 12 I got in April. Using one actively and was considering selling these and getting the 13. Only concern would be these are unlocked vs the new ones from metro will take a year to unlock.

Yes, you get $180 if trading in a 12 towards a new iPhone or $255 if trading in a 13, but I wasn't planning on upgrading my main phone at this time and I didn't want to wait any longer as there's a good chance that Apple will be changing the trade-in values in a week. I had originally planned to keep the Metro iPhone 13's to use a travel phones when they unlock in a year, but I also ended up getting 13's from Straight Talk (2 month unlock policy) and then later on I could not pass up the Visible+ $395 12 months of service plus free iPhone 13 deal (also 2 month unlock policy) so I ended up with way too many iPhone 13's.
Makes sense. Using my 12 as a travel phone right now while I'm out of the country. Lack of physical sim makes it hard with my 15.
I missed out on the iPhone 13 deals in the last month as I'm out of the country.

Well the 12 makes a good travel phone too. You can try for a 13 next year, there's a good chance you will be able to get one for free (with one month of service).
By the way, I wouldn't call them "Genius Bar" but rather, A.I., which stands for Apple Idiots.
Let me show you how the Diagnostics Mode works by a series of posts below.
1. Turn off your iPhone completely for 30 seconds.
2. Press and hold both the volume up and volume down buttons.
3. While holding down the buttons, plug the iPhone into a power adapter.
4. When the Apple logo appears, release the buttons.
5. When a message appears saying "Diagnostics allow Apple to identify potential hardware and software issues with this device," tap Start Session.
