It's because of the switch it uses. Known issue and very common with this model. If you ever have interest to repair, here's the switch

This kind of air fryer looks awesome, I know it does. It looks better on the counter than a deep basket type. But heed my works, these compact air fryers are a hassle to clean. Because the food is so close to the coils at the top, it makes splattering really bad and then you have basically no way to clean the top part of the inside of the air fryer. I'm getting rid of my Cuisinart air fryer for a deeper basket type because it just makes cleaning so much easier and feasible in the first place.
We just bought this as a replacement for the same unit that essentially died after 5-7 years of nearly daily use (not really sure how long we have had it, but at least 5 years). It still turns on and we have it working on the air-fryer setting, but it doesn't work as a toaster or broiler anymore so it was time for a new one. At this price, it was easy to just run out and get the same unit. Now we have two baskets, two trays and two racks.

I can't complain about cleaning issues as it wasn't something we really considered. We wrap the crumb tray with foil and use it. Replace as needed.

We air-fry with the basket at the lowest level, so maybe that helps avoid the spattering onto the heating elements. Otherwise, this is a great compact toaster/oven/broiler/air-fryer.

I've had a similar one for a few years and can confirm it is awesome, you just need to accept that it's going to be impossible to clean and just let it build up on the sides.

Own this and I haven't had as good of an experience. The temperature accuracy is way off and it burns food quickly. I have to constantly turn down the temp and time to avoid burning food. Came from a Breville and only replaced that because it died after 15 years. IMO - you get what you pay for with this unit.

If something splatters, then it wouldn't matter how deep the basket is. Basket air fryers also gave a heating element on top so you run into the same issue. Our current instant pot brand has caked in grease and all this junk at the ceiling that I did not realize was building up.

Grabbed one the last time it hit $99 at Target.

Temp is generally 50 degrees too high, which is crazy. What kind of engineering/testing is that?

I created a chart with every setting and the set vs actual temperature based upon an oven thermometer.

It seems to cook very quickly on airfry mode, so the airflow must be good. You'll need to reduce cook time in that mode.

I find the black lettering on the dials to be very hard to read without a lot of light.

Not a bad unit, but it could have been outstanding with better engineering.

Does anyone know how to get rid of the plastic/factory smell on this unit? Mine still smells after 3 uses.

Is this stainless steel on the inside? Or teflon/similar carcinogens on the inside?
