Breathable Rain Jacket Hierarchy


Cheap 2 layer jackets (wal-mart quality stuff) ~$30-40
Cheap 3 layer jackets (patagonia torrentshell, north face venture, etc) ~$60-$100
2.5 Layer Goretex / Pertex systems (forray, helium, minimalist) ~$120-$200
3 Layer Goretex systems (ARCTeryx jackets, Alpine Patagonia / Northface gear, etc) ~$300+

After testing both on some rainy hikes, I ended up choosing the OR Foray 2 over this, but it was very close and really came down to a few details. That said, I'm not a sophisticated outdoorsdude by any stretch (my Columbia and EB gear usually suffice).

Heck, if they had this in black or gray (because I'm a boring kinda dude) I'd probably pull the trigger anyway. Whew!😅

After testing both on some rainy hikes, I ended up choosing the OR Foray 2 over this, but it was very close and really came down to a few details. That said, I'm not a sophisticated outdoorsdude by any stretch (my Columbia and EB gear usually suffice).

Heck, if they had this in black or gray (because I'm a boring kinda dude) I'd probably pull the trigger anyway. Whew!😅

Torrentshell is entry level. Granite Crest is a bit more breathable and a softer feeling material. Not as crinkly. Also has a chest pocket

It's got pit zips and stows in its pocket.
Pit zips for ventilation are the biggest feature for keeping dry in my experience.

Black isn't boring. It hides stains the best and looks good on most people.
