The M1 I am on right now has a second screen via USBC cable. You mean a THIRD screen, right? Pretty sure that's the limitation, not that you cannot have a second monitor.
Very stingy on the SSD size.
I don't think that's right about the monitor, you can extend to at least one external display natively. Source: Me. Looking at my laptop with one monitor connected to the USBC port.

Agree with you completely. Apple def nickel and dimes. But for most folks, depending on cloud, 256 is enough storage.

750 for a new laptop. 2 year warranty, good deal.

That being said, m4 laptops are on the horizon.

As usual Apple is very expensive on upgrades, but if you want to play in the Apple world, for most people this is enough.

I have been thinking about upgrading my 2016 MacBook Pro for awhile - I use it for lite development and a travel laptop. Question is for me is when is the right time to upgrade. Fairly happy with what I have so is it better to wait til black friday or jump on this deal. Like many of us, the limited upgrade options and mem/ssd specs is an issue.

Just remember that (out of the box) you can only use an external monitor to MIRROR the laptop screen… You can't add a second/third monitor unless you have some kind of USB-C to HDMI/DP that can *internally* handle additional displays…. Meaning you need more than just a converter/splitter, which can get a bit pricey.

To have multi-monitor capability out of the box you need to buy an Apple laptop with either a PRO or MAX Apple CPU… which generally means a Macbook Pro.

Of course most decent windows machines can do at least one additional monitor as an extension of the laptop display (not limited to mirroring)… oftentimes they can handle even more with simple/cheap usbc to hdmi dongles.

This, MacBook Air is great overall… I just wanted to mention that limitation because a lot of people are unaware of it… And of course, the memory and hard disk are not expendable at all on these… but otherwise it's a decent price for an M2 Air.
the air m3 can have 2 external monitors if you are not using the laptop itselfs screen.

M1/M2 only 1 external + the internal screen.

lol @ 256GB storage in a $750 computer in 2024

Some people chose not to store much in their PCs but in external encrypted drives.
Actually 8GB of soldered RAM is much worse. Would it have killed the to add a second slot??

Yes it means they can't charge 200 dollars for a 20 dollar upgrade and 5 dollars in parts.

Don't even care about the storage but the 8gb ram soldered with no slots kills it and it's 750? Nope worth 300 at most. it's ebook chrome book with apple logo

All they need to do is make a universal case that is metal letting us screw the boards into the system like pc and the laptops would be totally and utterly destroyed

Frame work is still too expensive.
It's not hard to do either they choose not to do it is all. As I already have a few designs in mind.

Unlock your laptop design and parts
Install any LCD OLED ips etc into your laptop.
Connectors adapters.

These mofos don't want us to do it because they want to keep prices up.

I'm running an M1 Air, 2020, with 8GB RAM. Now that I've upgraded to Sequoia, I'm getting out-of-memory messages all the time--it's asking me to close apps. I don't think I'm doing anything insane, either. I knew something like this would eventually happen--I wanted 16GB at the time but it was Covid times and I was stuck with 8.

8 Gig of Unified Ram, means shared w/ video. Might be why some here state, they can only mirror on 2nd monitor.

And when that SSD begins filling up . . .

"Here's how 256 GB SSDs are reportedly implemented on these machines:
  • M1 MacBook Air - two 128 GB flash chips
  • M2 MacBook Air – one 256 GB flash chip
On a M1 MacBook Air with a 256 GB SSD, the processor has the opportunity to access both chips simultaneously. On a M2 MacBook Air with a 256 GB SSD, everything has to go through a single chip."

Complete lies! You can extend the screen from M1 to another monitor.

I would wait til Apple announcement the new few days for the M4 Macs. The prices for the M3 and M2 will drop.
