I'm sure all of you have heard the praise of this game, but I wanted to offer a warning.

I downloaded this game, lost 150 hours of my time, and reemerged grumbling about juminos and Jojamart

No game is for everyone. Stardew's just sort of a peaceful game where there's essentially zero consequences and you can do whatever you want. I saw a comment from someone who spent the entire first game year fishing, and some people will spend days, weeks, months (real time) building up their farm to look the way they want. But, if the game's not for you, it's not for you. Odds are you have a huge backlog that you'll never clear if you devoted the entire rest of your life to it, so if Game X doesn't hold your attention, just move on to Game Y or Z. No need to feel even the slightest bit guilty about it.

If anyone is wondering, doing a quick search, $7.49 is the historic low for Stardew Valley out of multiple legit Steam key dealers. It has been this price only 2 other times in past 18 months so it's a worthwhile purchase.
I picked this up for my Steam Deck OLED and have enjoyed it tremendously as well as another steam game, Dave the Diver.

Thanks OP! I just bought a OLED SD because I have a work trip to London and haven't bought any games yet. I have a feeling this should keep me busy for my roundtrip 21.5hr flight time.

I can never make it past the first hour. I've tried twice. Met the NPCs then cut some grass then got bored and switched games. I didn't find the "hook"

This game any good? Never heard of it and it seems really basic.

The greatest thing about this game is that you can play it like there are zero consequences, or you can play it like every 10 minute chunk matters, and you constantly restart days to maximize efficiency of what you get done in a day. I know adults who play Stardew Valley for hundreds of hours, but their kids also play it as much. It's an unbelievably versatile game and highly recommended to everyone!

I'm not saying this will happen to you, but it took me 3 separate tries over the years before it hooked me.

Between my own playthroughs, and my playthroughs with my kids, and my kids playing with their friends, we have over 1,200 hours banked into this game. Part of the attraction, I think, is how the game introduces several new mechanics as the game opens up. It's appears to be a simple farming game, but it's also not a simple farming game.

The dev has also, historically, been committed to free updates, and vowed he'd never charge for a DLC or update to the game "for as long as he lives."

My kids will still regularly ask me "hey dad - do we have time for a day in Stardew?" (days = 15 - 20 mins of game play each). I've been computer gaming consistently since our computer games all came in the form of programs in magazines that we encoded on cassette tapes, ourselves... and I do believe Stardew Valley has a place on my top 20 of all time.

It's good. It's one of the top 30 best selling games of all time, basically tied with Diablo 3 and beating Borderlands 2 and Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal. If you liked Harvest Moon, you'll love this game.

It's not for everyone, it's for people who want to get immersed and lose 100 hours, optimizing and stuff. It's like the sims, I guess (never played that though). I'm buying a copy for one of my friends and I'm a miser.

Also the game can be offline, has couch co-op, and is still actively updated.

If you've ever played a Harvest Valley game, or maybe Rune Factory, it's pretty comparable. It would also be similar in nature to the My Time series, though those focus on "building" instead of farming.

But it's a nice relaxing, some would call it cozy, game where you can just play casually. Maybe you want to take an in-game season off and just explore the mine. You can do that. Maybe you are fascinated by one of the romanceable NPCs and power through their entire story line as fast as you can. It's a little more structured than say Minecraft, but it's still largely a sandbox game where you can do whatever you want. For looking like a 16-bit SNES level game, it is surprisingly good... IMO anyway.

You probably want to keep them from ever finding out about Stardew Valley Expanded (SVE) then. It adds a bunch of new NPCs and content. IMO, it's basically Stardew Valley 2.0, and for the 1.6 update ConcernedApe actually hired the SVE developer to work on the core game, so maybe over time we'll start to see some SVE elements make their way into Stardew vanilla.

This is free if you have gamepass ultimate just fyi. But I have sunk about 150 hours into this game and I have loved every bit of it. I'm getting older so I prefer games like this that you can pick up and play for 30 minutes to an hour and then not play it for a week or so. There is so much to do. It's very similar to the snes harvest moon games. Just a nice relaxing farm building games.
