If you're a non-4K UHD player household and you love Lord of the Rings, you'll be happy you bought this. Go for the extended edition, as unlike many other films, it actually adds great content and cinematography.

If you've got a 4k capable player (standalone, PS5, Xbox Series X, etc), you should up the budget a little and get the UHD copy that is also on sale.

Thanks! The BD set comes with the excellent DVD appendices which I've been wanting to pick up. The 4K set does not come with them.

How is it compared to just streaming 4k version on one of the streaming services?

I think it's on Max, but one of the many streaming services I have access too.

No digital codes. I don't believe the 4K discs come with digital codes anymore either as they expired.

Remastered? What? Why? The original was brilliant and the effects still hold up to today. What did they change?

uhh the 1080p blu ray version looks better than the 4k streaming version at least to my eyes but everyone else will have different ideas on the matter

if this is like the set i own, be aware you use 2 discs per movie due to ?? i know the sound is all uncompressed idk if the video was ... don't think so but i know watching with my brother he kinda liked it as the spots they pause in the film actually are good halfway spots to act like an intermission for snacks and stuff

I'm debating about getting the 4k at some point... but having owned the dvd versions then the extended blu ray set its just kinda?? like how many times do i need to rebuy this set of films? granted it is probably the best trilogy ever made imho and i don't think it will ever be replicated in the current age of cgi

Fellowship - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPBP-3-_Beg
Towers - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TW94vpWebg
Return - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOoHex6OZ-g

Overall it's mixed to positive feedback, but everyone agrees that the 2011 extended blurays for fellowship were messed up so they had to be fixed sooner or later.

They added the object based soundtrack to it which is extremely good.

The caveat is you really need to have an optimal setup to take advantage of it over the original BR disc.
As you mentioned the original BR disc is reference.

My eyes will hurt really bad watching anything on DVD resolution.
Moreover the 4k edition improves on the excessive green tint in the bluray version. Not sure if the remastered bluray takes care of that though.
