Great example of "if you build it they will come" mentality. Product without a use. Get a decent M2, stick it in a USB-C case and still get much better transfer speeds than this one.

The price is still too high right now, but this spells the end of portable hard drives.

WD recently split Sandisk off from the drive portion of their business because they know what's coming.

I've got a lot of the 2.5" WD drives, and if I could afford 4 or 5 of these right now (which I can't) I'd be cleaning house within days... Good riddance IMO...

While I'm at it, I'd also like a 100TB SSD (or SSDs) in a package about the size of a 3.5" drive or smaller, but.........

IIRC, trim is not supported via USB controller. So if you do a lot of rewrites, portable SSD is still not a good option :/

The end of portable 2.5" hard disk drives is coming. Of course I can't say what that date will be, but WD's separation of the company into two companies (drives vs SSDs/NAND) says that they know it and the time is getting closer.

When you consider that you can fit 20+ TB (easily) into less space than what a 2.5" drive requires, there's no contest or doubt about the direction. Cost to the consumer is, and will remain, the biggest issue. Hard drives should be getting cheaper because they've been making drives for so long the challenge of doing it isn't great and most facilities were rebuilt in the last 10 years.

NAND is actually getting cheaper too (by volume/storage capacity), but we don't see it due to industry-wide collusion to price gouge. This is no secret.

I bought my 4TB 990 Pro from Sansung (shipped) for $199; they weren't losing money on it either.....One could easily extrapolate to the point that a 16TB hand-held drive could, and should, cost $750.
