I have the MS-01 from them as my firewall/router and was looking for a 2nd mini PC to be my new hypervisor.
This is not exactly what it looks like at first glance.
You would think its a mini pc but its a custom laptop board for a desktop mini PC ITX build.
The cpu that is not replaceable or upgradable, and it does not have a mini pc power supply you must connect an external desktop power supply to it, etc.
So you will need a PSU, likely a case, RAM, Storage, etc to build this out.
I think there are better options out there for most people as tempting as it is for me I would probably get another MS-01 instead of this becuase the only really good thing is the CPU but I don tneed a CPU that powerfull for my hypervisor.

Waiting for the Intel version to go on sale. At least that way, I can use the built in GPU for transcoding and free up the PCIe slot to add HBA card for sata/sas.

Eh, while it's a cool idea, seems a bit too much like the NUC with its compute modules - pricing doesn't really make sense. You can probably get something more powerful just by using a ~200 dollar desktop CPU and ~150 dollar motherboard if you find the right deals (i.e. Microcenter). Best use case for these is probably if you are seriously limited on the thermals or size where this is a pretty thin build.
No $200 current CPU gonna beat 7945HX. This model is not new and lot of reviews are available, including Notebookcheck.net. This performs between a desktop 7900X and 7950HX, while consuming lot less power, just 100W max. https://www.notebookcheck.net/Min...293.0.html

I'm intrigued. Which desktop CPU for $200 is faster than a 16 core 7945hx? 😲

transcoding works best with intel quicksync from my understanding, in terms of power efficiency and compatibility with plex for instance
It comes down to a hardware transcode via the IGPU versus software running on the CPU. The hardware is going to be more efficient and faster generally, however this CPU would have no problems transcoding. Sometimes the hardware transcode isn't quite as clean visually as a software transcode but it is a decent trade-off for the efficiency generally. I don't think you could go wrong with this combo for transcoding if you needed it.

If its hardware transcode, its not really part of the GPU or CPU, it's dedicated silicon built for that task.
GPUs are very programmable and have been for a long while now; it's still considered "software" if you take a general-purpose GPU and use e.g. shader programs to perform your transcoding.
I honestly don't care *at all* about transcoding, or virtualization. It seems more and more those are complicated solutions to very simple problems, or problems that are contrived.
Isn't this a better deal for many? It comes with a case and PSU (400W). You only need RAM and SSD. CPU is only a bit weaker.
If you need more power or already have a mini-ITX case, I guess it's better to go with the SBC, though. https://store.minisforum.com/prod...90s7-129i7

ummmmm not really, . this same spec posted on SD not too long ago for $329 without the case not too long ago
