Does anyone have this who can comment on whether it would be good for a beginner 11-year old? Lots or reviews say good for "beginner" but i'm wondering if this could be too much for a child to handle.

If you have the time and there is a local Joann Fabric store you may want to go there and just talk to a sales person to get an overview. They have low to high end machines. To me your best bet would be to join an online forum on sewing to get opinions from the worker bees. My $.02. Never forget I went to a fabric store waiting to buy a sale item at a gun store that hadn't opened at that time. She was so fast talking I just nodded my head listening. She then asked my if I could speak english. I tried not to laugh because she was serious as a heart attack. I wish you and your kid luck.

Thanks for the advice! Your story reminded me when my mother-in-law was explaining her Bernida to my daughter. The woman can''t figure out her phone but she knows the tech in her $4k sewing machine inside out! She's not current on starter machines, but she also suggested Joann. Looks like I do have one closer than I realized. Thanks again!

Bernida is super decked out so you know the high end. Just a warning! Back in the '80's this guy in a local fabric shop did regular "maintenance" in sewing machines for $20-30. My mom would have me throw her machine in the trunk so she could take it to him. I looked up in the singer manual found it takes all of 5-10 minutes to use 3 in 1 oil in a couple of areas. Then every few months instead of me throwing her machine in the trunk in 3 minutes I oiled her machine in 5 for nothing. That guy had a real sham going on. You may want to look at craigslist for an estate sale. I got 4 1960's sunbeam mixmasters (2 working) for $25. I juiced 5 five gallon buckets from my lemon trees for frozen juice. Just a thought. if your daughter is a shopper It might be fun to take the whole family to a yard sale. That way your wife will ask you when you buy a tool, "do you really need that?. Glad to help. Hope you can help your daughter without breaking the bank. PS if she gets into upholstery the phone will ring off the hook!
