Same is true for prescription drugs. I use Costco (warehouse and mail order) for prescription drugs frequently and am not a member.
Costco has higher quality stuff and is cheaper when it comes to proper bulk purchases.
BJ's I can do regular grocery shopping without needing to store a ton of stuff and still save versus the grocery store. Also, while Costco is improving these days, BJ's blows them out of the water for convenience. The BJ's app and website have reflected in store inventory and pricing for years. You can also order for pickup or curbside for free with the same prices as if you'd have walked the store yourself including clearance prices (which can often be quite good).
The ability to grocery shop and not need to bring my two small children inside a chaotic Costco, while still getting similar pricing overall, is a win. I do enjoy the occasional Costco trip on my own looking for deals or some grocery items I will occasionally stock from them, though. However when I leave I often feel like I need a sedative from all the mindless inconsiderate people in the store.
Also, Costco baby formula and their semiannual diaper sale are the best offers out there for parents. They make the membership worth it alone.
Hands down, BJ's app is far superior. I've written to Costco asking them to get with the program but they haven't. I've been a Costco member for probably 35 years, BJ's has only been around me for 17 or so years and I joined immediately, so that's how long I've shopped there.
Additionally, someone said gas was higher at BJ's. Not if you get their credit card. Not only do you get 15¢ off/gal, but they also run specials frequently, offering an additional 10¢ off for each item you purchase from a specific list of items... I don't generally buy those items, but if you do, you could pay as low as 1¢ gallon on gas at BJ's.
