Clearly Costco is the one to keep, if you can accept their sometimes entitled employee attitude (higher pay + job security?). But BJ's does carry stuff Costco does not.
The problem with BJ's, other than inept corporate management and Customer "Service"? Coupon hell. In order to get their prices down, you have to clip coupons every time you shop.
And low inventory turnover at BJ's also means half the time their food expiration dates are a few weeks out vs many months for Costco.
We have multiple stores for brand (6 for Costco!) within 10 miles. They tend to locate together so their pump gas prices, while they vary dramatically by location, always are within a penny or two in the same clump/location. Costco 4% gas reward, Sam's 5% reward, BJs, flat 10 cents. Due to the over $3/gal pump price, we almost never buy BJs gas with that 10 cent reward.
Since our closest and cheapest gas Costco renovated the pumps, the lanes are now four pumps deep, with very handy traffic lights. Used to be huge lines. No more.
Sam's is the also ran for us - they just don't carry the stuff we buy.
Costco hidden secret: Costco Business Centers. Ours carries many of the things BJ's carries but that Costco warehouses do not. And the CBC price can be as much as $2+ cheaper than BJs, no coupon hell required.
As others have mentioned, trying this link while logged in offered me a membership upgrade for $15 but not a renewal at $10.
I still like BJs for carrying a more variety of items.
