What is the use case for something like this without an operating system?
Door stop, blunt weapon, conversation piece, the possibilities are endless.

can anyone tell me what is this used for? I am a newbie and this is the first time I am seeing a product like this. Is this a NAS like Synology?
You could run something like proxmox with a DSM VM

How is this vs N100?
The Ryzen is more of a brute force powerhouse, but the N100 has a better hardware AV1 decoding capability. So if you're thinking of running VMs, the Ryzen might be better. But if you're thinking of running Plex, the N100 might be better.

The N100 4 bay is $300 and the Ryzen version with the same chassis and one more NVME is $400 barebones. Dual 2.5Gbe Intel NICs. A lot nicer metal case/frame.

Head over to the NASCOMPARES youtube channel for more info.

A 6 bay Ryzen model didn't come out yet.

Install the free NAS OS like freeNAS, TrueNAS scale, or Unraid.
I'd advise newbies against going full into Proxmox and Virtual Machines. You'll run into a lot of issues but most of them are fixable but it's a lot of time. I mean there is a way to install Synology NAS but it's a pain.

Kind of a cool thought for replacing my micro atx blue iris security cam computer (that also runs a web server) but I'm pretty sure I've always heard intel based cpus are better for BI.

The n100 is 199$ on Amazon which is it's normal price. You're looking at a reseller.

The 16/512 has been on sale for as low as $199 as well. I'm waiting for that to happen again to pull the trigger.

Ive been following this product for about 8 months now n

I have the n100 and for a backup or small Nas it will work well. If you want a home lab experience I'd go with the ryzen setup
I'm running proxmox with multiple VMs. Home assistant plex server with transcoding, minecraft docker. N100 rocks. Never had so much as a dropped frame or glitch or slow webui load.

I was talking about the new 4 bay NAS with metal case.

Edit: NM... Looks like it's sold out. You'll probably have to wait a few weeks or months for another batch.

I have a QNAP but it's always bugged me that if anything goes wrong I can't just take the drives out and use in another system or with an external case. You're locked into their file formats. Tempted to get this and move all my stuff to it, so I have something that can be easily moved and accessed with normal file formats to serve as a NAS and Plex Server. Is any of this thinking wrong or misguided? Should I get the N100 instead if all I want is Plex and NAS? TIAπŸ™
