I bought 2 and both were DOA. Kinda made me skeptical of their testing/refurbishing. I bought two from another seller on different occasions and both are fine. But I read about more positive experiences from them than mine. Return was pretty seamless as well.

these are SATA drives, you can use them on your desktop computer, they also provide a power adapter in case you need it.

Compared to WD Reds that run at 5400, how much more Wattage does each of these Server Drives take?

I ask because I'll be running 4 of them in my NAS, and I happen to measure Wattage used per every appliance in my home, it gives me a very accurate estimation of my Power Bill and keeps me from entering higher Billing Tiers from the Power Company.

Not to mention, more power used = More Heat, so just wondering what to expect with Four Server Driver @ 7200rpm compared to my Four WD Reds @ 5400rpms.

I pulled the trigger on one of these to fill the lone 3.5" bay in the bottom of my new Alienware rig that I secured through slickdeals for a slick price. It has 5TB nvme storage now so adding this 12TB of spinner storage, primarily for media and P2P. Hope it's not too LOUD!

As high as (from the Xbox) over a gig, as low as 400mbps after a while for big games.

And yep - if you go to storage there's an option for default location. Series S/X is on the internal/expansion drive, everything else is external. And I shuffle most of the smaller Series S/X games onto the USB until I'm using them; fast and easy to pull back to internal/expansion.

I'm not sure what current 12TB Red runs at 5400RPM. The specs for both the Red Plus and Red Pro show 7200RPM. Those drives are around 3W idle and 6W under load. These Ultrastars run more like 6W idle and 10W under load. If you allow the heads to park (EPC Idle_B) that will drop the idle power usage by roughly 2W. You could even go as far as enabling Idle_C (reduced spindle speed) or Standby_Z (full spin-down) but I'm not a big fan of those.

UDMA CRC errors likely wouldn't be a big deal, as they're usually caused by a bad SATA cable or controller compatibility issue, not a faulty drive. However, 100 reallocated sectors wouldn't be acceptable to me. In my experience, drives with more than a dozen or so bad sectors almost always continue accumulating more. And that''s to say nothing of the 30 day vs 5 year warranty.

I see lots of this here. Are you guys running them in a system that is sending 3.3V to the drive's PWDIS pin? The drive will not spin up at all if so. Other than that, I've only ever purchased these refurbs from sellers in packs of 4 or larger, and they come with good padding. I wonder if people buying fewer are having drives damaged in transit from insufficient packaging, if not PWDIS.

It's not the packaging. Even single drives are well packed, even if not to the extent of the veritable armored trucks SPD uses. The Power Disable issue is a legitimate concern, though many of the reports I've seen are things that would not be related. One rarer issue I've heard is someone trying to use them with the SATA-USB bridge from a shucked WD EasyStore/Elements. Those will not natively work with these drives, as they're not on the whitelist.

I suspect it's simply that many of these drives are just dead/dying. They're advertised as having roughly 5 years of heavy use. Recent BackBlaze stats show at least one model 12TB Ultrastar failing at much higher rates, starting around 4 years of age. Also, the drives being sold here generally seem to have endured an extremely high workload, often roughly twice the manufacturer's rated 550TB/year. And I'm not entirely convinced the seller is thoroughly testing them, though I could be wrong.

Thanks for the specs and tips for the Ultrastars! - btw, my Reds @ 5400 are like 10 years old, WD40EFRX. Looks like they Idle at 3.3w, Sleep at 0.4w and Read/Write at 4.5w. Fwiw, compared to the specs provided for Ultrastars, for a Four Drive Nas, it would be 40w under load vs my current Reds @ 18w. If I use the Config you suggested, it would drop down to 32w. Definitely food for thought for myself. Every little bit adds more ambient heat to my room (which is without an AC, lol) - Apprecaite the advice, will be researching options, immediate cost versus heat/power. (Apologies if I sounded a little OCD about this stuff XD.)
