Within $10 off the regular price of a refurb Bambu A1 mini (at microcenter) makes this a tough sell despite the slightly larger build volume.

IMHO in this price range:
  • if you want to just print stuff without futzing with a single thing get a Bambu
  • if you want to tinker with your machine get an Elegoo Neptune 4 and install Open Neptune. It basically reverts everything back to the Open Source versions of the software. You literally have 100% control over everything at that point.

How much better is the Bambu vs Ender S1? I just picked up the Ender S1 2 weeks ago. Its alright pretty decent. I am still learning about 3-d printing.

Bambu Labs in general is going to have a more refined work flow. You will have more material profiles at hand so you have less concern if the material settings are correct. BL are going to be a good bit faster than the S1. I would expect most prints to be about half the time. Note that this is less than the advertised peak speeds would suggest but most printing time is not at peak speed. BL printers are all network capable. BL's preferred print method is the print job goes from your computer, through their server and down to your printer. That allows you to print and check your print remotely. It also means you can basically directly print files from their website without going through the process of slicing (the slicing happens automatically for you). The BL hardware is also generally good stuff. The bed leveling and Z offset is fully automatic. Note that the "cheap" BL printer is the A1 Mini with a 180x180mm build area. Looking at on line models it seems many were designed fit on a 220x220 build area (the size used on most Creality printers).

I will say, if you are at least mildly technically capable the extra steps required with the S1 are not that hard and ultimately don't limit what you could print on the S1 vs a Bambu printer. The S1 is more than capable of turning out good prints, it just may take a some additional effort. My brother is learning his way around an S1 pro. He found doing the test prints built into Orca slicer was helpful. They allow him to get just the right print temps etc for his specific materials. This is the sort of characterization BL tries to do automatically via having a database of materials on line.

No experience with Ender in particular, but I believe they are similar to other 3d printers w.r.t. what you have to know to use one effectively. I compare my Bambu X1C to a laser printer. You take it out of the box, hit print, and it'll just do its thing reliably every single time. You don't really have to give a lot of thought to the mechanics of the 3d printing process the same way you don't really care how the LED bar is aligned to the drum in your laser printer. My other 3d printers (Neptune 4 pro and Neptune 4 max) are more like a hobbyists perpetual project car. I understand that the Enders fall into this category as well. They work great when they are all tuned up, are a great value, but you do have to put in the work into aligning & calibrating them.
On the flip side, all of the knowledge I gained from tuning + calibrating the Neptunes has allowed me to take the Bambu prints to the next level as necessary (e.g. I'll run manual extrusion + overhang calibrations on new filaments if I want to get every last bit of performance out of a print)

I just purchased this printer from best buy for $199. The week before, I owned an Ender 3S1 which I sold to buy the A1 Mini. I currently have an a1 mini behind my back at the office. It belongs to one of my coworkers. My plan was to try the Ankermake as I have a 60 day return window. I have burned the ankermake m5c up and so far, it was performed very well. I had the ender 3s1 for 2 years and never got as much out of it as I have the m5c.

What I like about the m5c is that it is ridged and has a nice size build plate. I like that is has full gantry. I do not mind that there is no screen. I was using octopi with my ender 3 s1 for remote printing. Using the ankermake app on my phone or computer works just fine. I do not use the play button. In fact, I wish you could map the play button to a RETRACT action. This way, I go to the printer, hit the play button and wait for the beep. Change filament and keep it moving. I do not need a cheap camera... I use a wyze camera in my enclosure same as I did with the ender 3 s1. I also have the unit on a wifi power strip. For the ender it was important to stop a print if I could not get to octopi. The ankermake app is very responsive. I can start and stop prints if there is an issue. I can save power by leaving all off until I need it with the power strip. I printed things from the app, but like to use the computer for more slicing and changing things. I do not know if you can manipulate the files on the phone app or not.

What I do not like... It is louder than my ender 3 s1 and the a1 mini. My ankermake is in an enclosure like the ender 3 s1 was, so it is no big deal or me... I did make the annoying beep sound low. I might just turn it off. I wish there was a light or a way to add a light. I will look into a usb-c light or make one. I like that that ender was customizable. I wish there was local storage with an sd card... I know why? Just because. U can use an usb drive, but I feel like that could be used for some more down the line. I see they have a screen which i do not need. I am worried with support and the lack of parts for maintenance.

Comparing it to the a1 mini... I still think the a1 mini is the goat. The out of box experience was amazing to see. I knew I needed to dump my ender 3 at that point. It is very smart, has a cheap/weak light.. cheap/weak camera, and has a much smaller print area. Those issues in my experience have not been on issue. I have only see 1 maybe two failures. One I think someone walked by and sabotaged it. it is not in an enclosure and has ac blowing on it... All prints are stable. Out of the box setup was slower... I put the m5c together, leveled it and gave it one of my files for something I printed on my ender 3 s1. IT worked perfectly. I like the bigger build plate. I like how small the a1 mini is. It is very refined. But Bigger is better. I will put the m5c like a half point behind the a1 mini if I must, but so far it is nothing to make me regret or change. I need to see some failure. Which I have not seen from either brand at this point. I brought 3 prints to compare with my friend that I printed with the m5c. With minimum slicing and using default settings. The only difference was the speed setting. Precision(slow under 4 hours ), Normal(medium 3 hours ), Fast(under 2 hours). Surprisingly, the fast setting produced the very best print with no stringing at all.

Why did I get the m5c and not the bambu? Mainly because I could get it now. I am expecting more deals to come down between now and black friday. I have 60 days to test this unit and might just keep it. What I would like over the a1 mini is if there is a good deal on a bambu P1S... I would return this for that.

For $150, I would buy the m5c without a doubt. I have not had any failure to print. Everything has worked out of the box.

Thanks for your sharing. I am still comparing these 2 models. Why do you have 60-day return windows?
I have only 30 days with amazon prime.

Best buy plus scam member... I made sure the 60 return window applied to their 3d printers which is why I bought it there. Not my favorite place in the world. I was going to buy it from them the previous week, but they raised the price form $199 to 240 while it was in my cart, lol! I don't like these fake deals just to get the price that Amazon is already selling it for. So any way I can get a benefit, I am all for it.

I thought the BB plus return was supposed to be 90 days? I just canceled my membership, and I hate going there.

I am sure it probably was 90 days. I only got it when I bought a MBA during tax free weekend. I never would have joined any of their programs. The gamer thing was good back in the day. They are only making changes for the worse these days.

Oh yea, not to mention their stupid coupons. You can clips to get money back for certain purchases. I clipped a coupon never got the money back, hit up CS they said oh I see it's not active on your account, I'll activate it for you. Still never got the money back.

Mine got delivered with one of the cables for the motors stuck inside the case and not actually plugged it. That probably caused it to fail for the first owner and that ended up burning and scratching the build plate badly. I swapped out the tray and cable and it's working flawlessly. This printer is super easy and fast and as long as you are adding support to your prints, you are good.
