I bought these last year for the same price and have been happy with them using them mainly at 70, 80 & 90 lbs. They clank a little if you jerk them, but I actually like the little reminder that it provides as it helps improve my form.

I bought the stage 3 90 lb set when these went on sale a few months back for the same price. They're decent enough on their own definitely sturdy but set aside another 200 for upgrading to knurled stainless handles from average Joe's for 100 bucks and you really want the power block stand really finicky getting the weight selector part set correctly to change weights if they're on the floor. Once I got the stand i select the weight first try where on the floor I would always have to fiddle with it for a good 15 20 seconds.

I want to point out that as someone who bought the sport exp to 90lbs, they are great in many ways but one thing I didn't see mentioned is that the reason I will be getting rid of these or swapping in a knurled grip is the grip size. The rubber grip itself is mediocre at best and then at the center is 38.5mm which as someone who has literal sausage fingers but very short fingers a real problem for moving them into position without dropping. While in other more standard sizes, I can do a fair bit past 90lbs on other dumbbells, its difficult grip-wise in a nongood way. It isn't training it is just slippery and unsafe. My theory is aftermarket knurled grips may remedy this but at the same time something to consider.

Followed the directions here and replaced the grips.

Average Joe's knurled grips are good and reasonably priced. Bare Steel Equipment makes a pricier pair with a little more aggressive knurling. You can get Cerakote colored for more too...

If you're early enough, you can request very aggressive knurling from AJ. But at this point they all might be sold out.

Can anyone comment on day to day usability of this dumbbell style vs one of the "turn the knob" types like this?

Want something easy to switch up but that feel solid, can be dropped a few inches onto a rubber floor without breaking or falling apart etc. Need 85-90lb max so there are not many options.
