check out the five-star review that uses the same copy-pasta which reveals absolutely nothing about what the product is, over all their reviews.

this seems like a real limitation of fakespot, which is giving this an 'A'

I seriously doubt these are 40x60. The objective looks much smaller than 60mm. It says it is both "wide angle" and 40x, which is impossible. A 40x image would be very dim with only 60mm objective, and it would be impossible to hand hold (too shaky) and very difficult to find non-astronomical objects and keep them in focus. I would guess this is actually somewhere around 8-15x and 30-40mm, probably with terrible image quality comparable to a preschooler's toy telescope.

Tl;dr for $5 it could be a fine toy for a small kid, but it's almost certainly flagrantly false advertising—and that's *better* than if its label is accurate.

Fakespot has long been proven unreliable. They give Frosted Flakes and Solo Cups D's and F's. Amazon gift card reload also gets an fat F. A Magic 8 ball is more trustworthy.

I'd agree with all of that. I have a very similar cheapo monocular (might be the same honestly) that claims to be 12x50. Based on some rifle scopes I own (while being to lazy to measure the lens of the monocular) even the 50mm seems like a slight exaggeration. The 12x may be too. I was actually playing with it today while trying to catch the stupid comet. Clarity is fine for basic stuff like bird watching, identifying people at a distance, being nosy, etc. For $5 might not be too bad of a purchase but you could probably do far better by spending $10-15 on something several levels better.

You simply don't understand! It's 40x when coupled with a 4x zoom on your phone.....4x X 10x = 40x! Simple! /sarc (although the above is probably the case)

Their dimensions also list 3.1" as the smallest dimension, which is ~79mm, so a 60mm lens is not out of the question.

With that said, I'm sure this is scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of quality.

The reason this is cheapis because it will not fit with modern smartphone. Its little phone adapter is designed for phones with one camera lens/ no bump only.

Give your five bucks to some homeless person instead. At least they will get a beer or two out of it.

Or you can waste it and be richer by a poorly made tripod. The lens/scope wont do much for you either way.
