Just a FYI: Crunchyroll is subject to licensing woes like any other streaming platform which means some series/seasons won't be available on that platform until much later if at all. If you're not an avid anime watcher, this may man nothing to you.

If you already have a Netflix subscription, you'd be surprised how many anime shows are available by just using a VPN to switch to another region.

This company has been committing mail theft and mail fraud against its paid actors for about 5 years. They also overwork a single translator to death after firing their subbing team to replace with AI and have 1 guy handling last pass editing. The quality of their subtitles are so poor you'd be better of guessing the dialog by context. Extremely disgusting behavior by their leadership and you should absolutely not give these people a dime of your money. Take whatever old junk laptop/desktop you have and install Jellyfin, setup sonar to track and find shows and use nyaa to download your anime and stream it with jellyfin to your TV or streaming box. Fansubs are objectively superior since they are done by passionate fans as well

From people that actually speak both languages and realize that the original translations don't get the correct context for what was said. People forget that other languages don't say things in the same manner. For instance correcting that the character actually said, "I'm afraid of heights" when the poor original subtitles say "I have a fear of flying"...when they're not flying in the scene.

Thing with anime is of course story building and characters can be hit or miss for people. People gave a lot of good ones (a lot of guaranteed good ones at least). I'll throw some out for you (mostly towards the top of the list) and also some that should be good for most...of course these are my opinion (dreading not realizing how long this list might get until I finish typing). I generally watch things with subtitles as I don't like how the english voice acting messes up characters personalities imo...why I'm trying to get into the field as a side gig.

I'll throw an underline on the name if it has a death/blood/demon/adult type of element to be aware of for younger kids (imo). I'll bold ones that should be cool as a story to watch with kids/teenagers/everyone if you like the story's concept. There are plenty I likely won't mention so if people request I can try to recommend others later.

- Akame ga Kill (should be in your preference due to Death Note and Parasyte...both are VERY good dark anime. Pretty sure there's a prequel story that SHOULD get made into an anime)
- Re:Zero (was mentioned and it has a current season releasing. Blood/death very often occurs as it is part of the concept...I'm not trying to ruin it)
- Oshi No Ko (has more seasons to come due to how good it is. IDK if this one is on Crunchyroll. Teenagers can watch this imo, Not ruining it but it's not as happy go lucky as first impressions give)
- Solo Leveling (seasons to come due to story being mostly done, great story/concept. More for mature watchers, I'd put this in the same lane as Parasyte)
- Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest (Current season releasing. Book/story is done so seasons to come. I'd put this in a more mature lane. My lady always says she has to keep getting over that the main character's primary love interest is actually older than she looks)
- Hell Girl (older, has multiple seasons. It's VERY appropriate for the halloween season, think of it as horror stories. I think of this a classic anime)
- Demon Slayer (book/story is done so seasons to come. Is extremely popular at the moment, likely will be an all-time great, You'll probably see someone dressed as a character for halloween this year if you haven't already in previous years...title is self-explanatory)
- Berserk (I'd underline it twice if I could, not for kids! Is an older anime but it's supposed to continue in the future. People consider this a classic even though it never finished)
- Angels of Death (good anime and interesting, enjoy it)
- Goblin Slayer (for a mature audience, if you know how goblins are said to make other goblins...or if you don't...you'll see it early in this one. Good story though so recommended)
- Hell's Paradise (honestly I still have to finish this, I just know it was good from the episodes I saw when it was releasing, probably more of a mature story honestly)
- Inuyashiki: Last Hero (the story concept is great. Main character is an old man. Has alien/robot aspect to it. I wish they'd continue it somehow)
- Kaiju No. 8 (is very popular because it's good and it will have more seasons. About monsters and humans that fight them)
- Claymore (old anime considered as an underrated classic that was not done justice as the written story was still in progress and they ended it differently. Wasn't drawn too badly to mind watching it in 2024. English dub also is fine to have on while doing stuff. Highly recommend as an old one)
- Cowboy Bebop (old anime that is a classic. There's a live/action version on Netflix. Only one season. Most people have seen/know about this already "See you Cowboy...")
- Dead Mount Death Play (interesting story, pretty sure it has seasons to come)
- Jobless Reincarnation (Book/story is done...and it's great...so more episodes to come. People mention it as questionable due to a grown man becoming a child and still being grown on the inside and having some questionable actions. In the end...it's not as bad as people make it out to be. I think the english dub makes the impression slightly worse.)
- Sword Art Online (currently releasing a side story...Gun Gale II...season. I'd say it's more for older kids and adults. Has many seasons AND a movie or two. Some people prefer specific seasons over the original story/season. The "Alicization" & "Gun Gale" seasons are VERY good, you could even watch them alone/first if you end up not liking the original/first season/story, but I'd watch everything in order. Is a good binge anime)
- Fire Force (good story, has seasons to come, has humor and action, It's in the lane of Fullmetal Alchemist...so plenty of people should like it. I think the english dub is good enough to not mind playing it)
- That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (book/story is done...also great...so seasons to come. Funny, has action, doesn't really have much mature stuff imo to worry about your kids watching it. Has demons, angels, dragons, monsters, action, magic, pretty much everything. This would be perfect to watch on Saturday mornings if I were still a kid/teenager, chances are if you have kids into anime they already watch it/know about it)
- Reincarnation of a Bookworm (book/story recently finished so seasons to come. I'd put it in the lane of Spy x Family, which is cool to watch with your kids/teenagers. Builds a little slow, funny moments, some sad moments. It's not only about books but that's the main motivation of the main character. Main character is a little girl to let people know)
- KonoSuba (seasons to come, this one is funny and is good however I dunno if you want to let younger kids watch it. It's probably more cool to watch with teenagers due to heavy flirting...it's not that bad honestly but still idk how people raise their kids)
- Re:Monster (good anime, should get more seasons. More mature so not really for young kids but teenagers should be okay. Main character is a goblin...see what I said about Goblin Slayer for a specific aspect to be aware of)
- The Eminence in Shadow (story is still going and is good so seasons to come. Funny, action, magic, sword fighting. I'd say it's more for teenagers or older.)
- I Parry Everything (story is good. Only one season but story does not seem to be completed)
- Mashle: Magic and Muscles (funny, should be cool for all ages, isn't finished so should have more seasons to come)
- My Hero Academia (is currently releasing a season, and is almost finished. People say this is like "My Super High" movie, good for all ages, super hero kids, good for Saturday mornings)
- No Longer Allowed in Another World (funny, more of a teenage/adult anime imo due to story)
- One Piece (Yes it has over 1000 episodes, is STILL GOING, and updates on Saturday nights. HAS A LIVE/NOT ANIMATED SHOW ON NETFLIX...so maybe watch that first to get an idea. I even heard one of the intro songs play during the Yankee-Dodgers game in the stadium. First episodes are old...of course...but it is drawn and colored better in recent episodes. This one is likes to have filler episodes that hide character backstory/personality in them. This is one I really do not like the English dub/voice acting but other people don't mind it. You've probably seen people dressed like this for halloween for years already)
- Reincarnated as a Sword (I think this one is good for most people & families, main character is a little girl)
- Shangri-La Frontier (currently releasing a season. I think this one is also good for most people however might be more cool to watch with older kids just because of story)
- Food Wars (IS ABOUT COOKING...lol. A good story, it's not done, english dub is fine too. Not trying to ruin it but I think it's family friendly. It's funny and serious, might even get your kids interested in cooking/helping you cook. I'd watch an episode first if you are a parent and you'll be able to decide if your kid can watch it, pay attention to when people eat/taste test the food...that's the questionable part why I say parents should watch it first as this happens throughout the anime)
- Dr. Stone (Story is a great concept. There isn't much fighting to worry about as that's not a main factor. Smart kids should like this one, good for Saturday mornings)
- To Your Eternity (More of a serious story. Concept is interesting. I'd put it more for older audiences due to story).
- Wistoria: Wand and Sword (good story, kids could watch this also, only one season but there will be more)
- The Apothecary Diaries (good story, more mature for thinkers)
- Yatagarasu: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master (more of a mature but good story)
- Sasaki and Peeps (funny, interesting story that is still going. main character is a grown man so kids might not get into it right away)
- Bleach (current season releasing. Has plenty of episodes. Has filler episodes too. It's in the area of classic and iconic for anime...like DragonBall...so it's pretty popular. The new episodes are drawn/colored much better btw)
- The Rising of the Shield Hero (good story, story isn't finished, probably not for younger kids)
- Blue Exorcist (current season releasing. Good story, has demons and magic, in the popular category...imo good to watch with mature kids/teenagers)
- Samurai Champloo (classic anime. I'd say it was drawn at the start of the newer style of anime so it holds up well visually today. English dub is good so you don't need subtitles really)

That's enough...more than enough maybe. Have more but I'd say these are ones people can watch without too much worrying of the story being bad.
Thanks a ton for so much information, people new to the genre need posts like these.

I'm glad if I am able to help anyone find some good ones to watch. The anime genre has had a bad connotation for a while, yet there are reasons it has continued to do so well. Primarily because the stories are good. There are some types of anime I did not mention like ones that focus more on love or high school interactions due to they being more niche...and those actually vary a LOT. Still, there are a lot of good ones in those areas too. For instance, a good silly "love" one to watch with a partner is "Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It". It's VERY funny imo and I'd think adults would like that one.

There's also the whole kindred genre of Chinese animation. The thing is that they aren't often available on common streaming services but people put them up on places like YT and DailyMotion...or other sites. Subtitles/translations for those are often not as good as they could be, the styles they use are often CGI or comic/still animation, and a lot of them have short episodes (4-7 minutes). However, if you REALLY want action, most Chinese animation involve fighting (to the point you are happy when they don't fight sometimes lol).

For Chinese animation:
"A Will Eternal" a normal style animation, and is REALLY GOOD. I would say it is extremely comparable to Avatar: The Last Airbender, not only in the style it is drawn but the way the story feels as it progresses. It has a lot of episodes/seasons (3-4?), the episodes are not short, has a season releasing currently, in a non-Earth world, and has martial arts style fighting. I'd highly recommend it though the only streaming service that shows it (I don't know if it shows the current season) is Viki.com which you can stream from the website or the app on Roku (or a place that shows Chinese animation). Again, out of all of these I'd highly recommend this one. An orphaned boy wants to become an immortal, gets a chance to do it, though he generally causes chaos wherever he goes, he's also funny.
"Swallowed Star" is a CGI one based on the premise that our (Earth) Planet got invaded by alien monsters that devastated most of the World. A graduating high-schooler wants to help protect post apocalyptic humanity, as he becomes a man (with a family) it also takes the story off planet, it's currently releasing episodes, and the episodes are not short. I'd recommend this one especially because it's different, there's often fighting against monster-beasts or people.
"Battle Through the Heavens" is a GREAT one also however THE STYLES OF CGI/ANIMATION CHANGE about 3-4 seasons in (FOR THE BETTER) but it has a good amount of seasons and the episodes are not short. Currently releasing episodes (the current season is VERY good), fighting almost every episode, is not set in an Earth-world. A boy was a family prodigy but then something happened that he suddenly lost his powers, he works hard to become great again and learns there's a reason why he lost his powers. Martial arts fighting (sort of) and they even made a live action show for it because it is THAT good. The live action show is actually not bad but I rather watch the animation.
"Perfect World" is a CGI style animation that has fighting CONSTANTLY. Story is about an orphaned boy that becomes awesome, and is not set on an Earth-world. Is currently releasing episodes, recently put out a movie, has 3(?) seasons, and the episodes are not short. I don't know how they keep creating new enemies/powers in this one but they do and it's not done in a bad way, though it seems it could go on forever.
"Soul Land" is a CGI style animation, there's a fight often in this one, not set on an Earth-world, and the episodes are not short. The first story is actually completed but it has a new story currently releasing with a new main character. The episodes of first story were released and split up weirdly, but you can find places that put them all together for you to watch. A man is reincarnated after trying to help his sect who saw him as a traitor and tried to kill him. As a boy in his new life, he wants to be a hero and continue the glory of that sect, learns that he is different in this life from others, a ridiculed teacher decides to mentor him as he sees potential in the boy (I'm trying not to ruin it lol).
"Throne of Seal" is a CGI style animation, episodes are not short. Currently releasing episodes in it's second season, not set on an Earth-world, and not really martial arts based. Demons have been destroying humans to the brink of extinction, a boy learns he has potential to do something about it. There's fighting very often.
"A Record of Mortal's Journey to Immortality" is a CGI style animation, and has just completed it's third season, is not set on an Earth-world. Comes from a highly-praised story/book. Lots of action, I'd say it's martial arts styled fighting, I think they really focused on making this one visually look awesome. Title explains the story really.

Quick mentions: Renegade Immortal (currently releasing episodes, title is describes show), The Daily Life of the Immortal King (a non-CGI style, 3-4 seasons, is funny. I only watched the 1st season so have this still to watch, main character is a high-school student), Shrouding the Heavens (CGI style, martial arts styled, story starts on our Earth), The Outcast (a non-CGI style, has 4 seasons, I've seen at least the first season on Crunchyroll before, story occurs on our Planet), The Kings Avatar (non-CGI style, has 3 seasons, based around a guy who plays video games and tournaments for it)

I'll stop there and I make a point to only recommend ones that were not short episodes. There are others but I elaborated on the above ones due to the fact that the stories are good.

Thanks for this list. I agree with you. I usually watch them with subtitles because it makes the content so much better for me. I've also learned a lot of Japanese. Wink

Thanks. I was going to try and get my feet wet with some anime and this will allow me to explore a bit.
Try Attack on Titan.

Please give me recommendations based on some of my favorites: Psycho-pass, Spy x Family, Parasyte, Death Note, Pantheon. I like Dragonball, but I'm burnt out on it so not really looking for that.
Try Solo Leveling or Kaiju #8
