I do love this reel. Certainly a great way to get started jigging for sheephead or something. The 7' rod makes it a little tough for the surf. But good find.

The 9' rod and 6000 reel is a much better deal for surf fishing. I also have a 10% off coupon making it about $90 for the combo. That's a solid deal.

In case anyone is wondering, 4000 size is too small for crab snaring. I have a couple of these in 8000 and they work great for that.

The penn spinfisher VI 4000/6000 combos for $98 at Walmart was a better deal last time but this is not bad too.

I honestly wouldn't suggest buying this combo due to its pure age... The Penn Battle I and II tend to have a so-so reputation amongst fishermen for being not smooth compared to modern-day reels. I have the Battle II and Battle III and everyone agrees in general that the Battle III is a huge leap of innovation compared to its predecessors, the Battle IV also just came out and it promises a better seal against the elements. Almost $100 for a 15-year-old spinning reel model isn't worth it in my books, if you need something fast and you're on a tight budget get a Penn Pursuit IV since I have found them to be very smooth and best class for the price point.

Improvements between generations are generally not significant, but we are now on version 4 of the battle. This is the first generation and originally came out in 2010.

Given we have seen battle 3 combos, spinfisher combos, daiwa bg combos, etc etc., I'd pass on this unless you really need something to fish in next couple of days.
