You can unlock all Tracfones after 60 days (the 12 month requirement went away almost 3 years ago).

Was in same boat about 6 months ago, trying to decide whether to go with a flip like the Nokia or a smartphone like the Moto G Play 2024. Kid is 10 and was starting 5th grade. We wanted him to have a phone so we could text him if plans changed (ride the bus, get picked up, etc) or for him to contact us if something came up.

I went with the Moto G Play 2024 and used Google's Family Link to limit the phone functionality.

Using Family Link, I disabled EVERYTHING except the phone, messages, Google maps app. I also disabled Google Search as otherwise, Google search would allow YouTube videos and websites to load through search (weird but true).

Nice thing is his (the phone's) location will show up in my Google apps so indirectly, I can see where his phone was last online. Had a slight spike in data use due to him using Google Maps while riding the bus to watch the dot move in real time but I downloaded local maps, disabled traffic view and told him to not switch satellite view on as that uses more data.

So far so good.

We stressed to him that this is strictly to help him reach us or be reached. if he mis-uses it, he loses it. He's not supposed to share it with friends as he knows it's a prepaid with limited minutes and texts intended to last the ENTIRE school year. If he blows through it, he'll have to pay to have it reloaded.

Eventually, he will need something more than the TracFone plan especially when he gets old enough to share the number with approved friends. The phone auto unlocked after 60 days, am thinking to use the phone with tello down the road, they have some cheap plans (unlimited text and call, 1GB for $9/month).

Where do you enter the promo code?

Looks like it goes to payment before you get a spot for a code.

This or Moto G Play?
As others chimed in, these are actually usable if you are planning to use them. No 5G, 720p, questionable software support... If they are FHD/+, I would actually consider.

After unlocking, is it possible to use something like US Mobile and just not use the TF service? I'm trying to set this up for a senior citizen relative.

I'm considering getting this for my preteen. Are there any better options out there? I'm not keen on Apple or Android devices for kids.
Was under the impression that America has determined they should be exposed as early as possible to become full fledged social-media junkies by middle school. EEK!

Personally I would advise just getting the flip phones or waiting for a different deal. Phones like the Moto Stylus 5g or several other comparable phones are pretty decent midrange phones and have been on sale for as low as about $40 previously and under $100 pretty regularly on similar deals. The g Play I haven't seen any good reviews of and it's lower end so not going to have much interest for resale so you're better off just getting the flip phones so you can harvest the service from them or have some good emergency phones around.

Has anyone heard of Hello Mobile? How is it?

Looks like cheapest plan is $5/mo for unlimited talk/text and 500MB/mo of LTE
Look into US mobile their cheapest I want to say is $7/mo for unlimited talk, text, 1gb data. So $2 more but twice the data and US mobile has extremely high customer loyalty and customer service ratings so isn't taking chances on an unknown.

My god... I placed the order and noticed afterwards it only charged me $7... I guess they automatically enroll you in "Easy Pay" or something which from the results of a quick search engine query, supposedly messes with your credit... not sure how that's even possible given what little information I provided. There was an option which allowed me to change the order from "5 installments" to "full amount" so I checked that and pressed save... I got a $66 charge issued against my card (it didn't honor the promo code anymore). Thankfully I used a privacy.com card so it declined. At that point I just canceled the order. Now to delete the account I have to call them and waste who knows how much time on hold. Buyer beware.
I'm still paying installments from my last tracfone deal because of this same problem. It's very strange how separating payments is the default option.

Do they stack on the same phone number to extend? Can they be extended within days apart?

Yes. I did this deal last week (bought with a $20 OFF 1st-Time coupon, so overpaid by $10). Activated Flip phone #1 with a transfer from my wife's Samsung A50 currently on TF/Verizon. Flip phone #1 had her phone number, balances + 1200 in each bucket, service end date extended one year. The next day, activated Flip Phone #2 with a transfer from Flip phone #1, same increases in bucket balances and one more year of service. Re-activated her A50 with a transfer from Flip phone #2. Easy peasy. It's a good idea to do each activation on a different day, so they'll will have different date stamps in the transaction history. Easier for TF reps to sort things out if something went wrong. They aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer.

Majority of these MVNO are pretty much the same. Service no so great it is cheap. If you are looking for even cheaper, redpocket has the cheapest plan for $30 for 360 days. 1000 call/1000 text/ 200mb per 30 days. (Yes, not monthly but 30 days). That's only $2.5 for 30 days and great for kids.
I think that plan has been discontinued. Ebay has a 500/500/100 for $30 for 360.
