To be fair, I did specify "limited sizes" in the title and original post. Wink

If anyone should be going hiking, it's someone with a 50" waist.

I agree in principle but not in execution - in hiking there's a lot of little micromovements that your body has to do, unless it's a gentle trail. Even a reasonably svelte person can have trouble with hiking! Flat ground is radically different from terrain. You gotta work your way up to it!

What other activities might you wear these pants besides hiking?

Their customer service is great and their house brand is of good quality. You have to catch things on sale for it to not be overpriced, but that's the case everywhere. They also consistently have member sales with few exceptions to what the discount applies to. I purchased a roof box and returned it after almost 1 year because I hurt my back and can't drive long distances anymore. They gave me no issues. Also, when I first opened my membership there, I didn't realize I was supposed to get the store credit later. So I called them, was shocked to speak to a guy who lives in Washington state, and he even sent me a gift card so I wouldn't have to wait for the "real" one to come. Nice guy who was clearly passionate about the outdoors, not just another 9-5er trying to get through the day. To me, REI is a pretty reasonable store with great customer service and return policies. The big difference between them and a place like Walmart, is that REI seldomly sells a poor quality item and won't treat you like a criminal. I've had Walmart deny me a return that fell under their 90 day return policy after about 35 days. I'm just tired of wasting my money and being treated like garbage, and that's the appeal of REI to me. Yeah I'm sure pompous affluent jerks shop there, but I suspect way more shop at Patagonia and the likes.

BTW unrelated to the above comment - to all those fat shaming in this thread, when was the last time you actually went on a hike?

Do most hikers have champagne taste on a beer budget? Might the women sizes be more fitting for these hikers?
