I disagree, but only for one type of buyer: those who are new to Persona games and just want to test the waters. $5 is a great price for that!

The lowest price history I can find for Royal is around $23. I own both versions of the game, and I didn't really find the additions to Royal to be worth that much more... it adds a new character who is largely inconsequential to the plot until you reach the DLC content (one more dungeon) at the very end of the game. It also adds a grappling hook feature to the dungeons, which can only be used in designated areas, and seemingly only exists to give you a few more treasure chests per dungeon.

$5 here will get you a complete 100-hour game, while Royal just tacks on another 15-20 hours to that.

I tried playing Persona 5 Strikers recently...that was rough. The game play wasn't bad but just skipping through cut scenes took like 5-10 minutes at a time. Then it was all cringe Sailor Moon level teenie bopper anime cliches (honestly Sailor Moon was probably better back in the day); who is dating who type sagas that didn't seem to tie in at all to the story.

If you are into the series it might not matter but if you are like me and just wanted a 3rd person game...perhaps watch a review or 2.

Check if it's 'Persona 5' or 'Persona 5 Royal.' Royal is an extended version with more characters.

It's Persona 5. Persona 5 royal is currently not on sale.

I doubt Royal will ever be $6.

Just chiming in. Persona 5 and persona 5 royal are different, royal is all dlc included from the original I think. Then, you have persona 5 royal ultimate edition which includes all dlc that came out for the royal version. All of this is ps4

Then persona 5 royal released for other systems and included everything in the persona 5 royal ultimate. This was released for ps5 which makes the naming pretty confusing for ps users.

I definitely wouldn't play the original if you plan on completing the game. Royal adds so many QoL improvements that I won't list here, but it makes the game more enjoyable for sure. The add one part at the end of definitely worth playing too, but look up how to unlock it because it is not obvious and if you miss it, a real disappointment! The game is easily 100-120 hours and it's definitely worth spending $15 to make it a more enjoyable 100-120 hours.

I suppose it's reasonable to consider whether "testing the waters" is worth any more than $5, but I think the difference between this and Royal is worth it. As a prior poster noted, for 100+ hours you probably want the best experience, and I think this definitely undersells what an enhanced experience this is... just check out some reviews, or the list of changes here:
https://www.pushsquare.com/guides...-persona-5
The story enhancements are, I think, very significant, and the added plot points really help conclude the game in a way that feels like it should have all along. So YMMV, but the difference between Royal and vanilla goes very far beyond just the extra hours. Which is not to say that vanilla is not worth playing on its own; it's a good thing my mother will never know how many hours I put into it.

Try the Yakuza series. You'd probably enjoy that.
