Stern warning to all Sders.

Get these headphones, they're amazing, but DO NOT update to the latest firmware from 1-2 months ago. People are reporting en-masse about the headphones shutting off randomly with a popping sound.
I've seen this behavior since the moment I updated. The pop is so loud sometimes it end up quickly taking my headphones off and throwing on desk. It's so startling.

There is absolutely no QA at Sony for their firmwares.

This is the newer XM5's. Build quality is better on the XM4's, and they also have better battery life than the XM5's. Personally I'd stick with XM4's if you have the choice. The way the ear cups connect to the headband is the weak point on the XM5's and they will eventually break due to it. Added a images of the weak point.

XM4 are better. They sound better and fold up better. XM5 sound tinny.

They were on clearance at Costco few days back.
Those Costco clearances are usually a miss as the deal is only in warehouse and if available, very limited stock

Could it be a noise cancelling chip going wrong?

Is it still better to order off their eBay page for the additional warranty?

Sorry to hear that! I've updated the latest firmware no issues at all.

Love these headphones, not much of an upgrade from the xm4/3s though maybe a bit more comfortable.mic is upgraded as well and is excellent

They sound great, have outstanding battery life and are great for calls. ANC is very good too.

However their software control is annoying. It tries to figure out what you want. It is best turned off.

Open box can imply someone opened it and used it. They have no way to know unless they test it and fix it if there's a problem. That's likely why. You can certainly get an open box that is practically new or an open box where someone licked the headphones and dropped it in the toilet.
Hopefully in that order

I get the random shut off since I got the headphones from secondipity through eBay. Sometimes it would shut off in 30 minutes of use, sometimes 2 hours, sometimes never in that session. I sent it into Allstate(?) for warranty repair. They said they opened, cleaned it, and it is working again. With the problem being so random, I don't see how they can be certain it is working again unless the tech sits there and use my headphones in multiple 2-3 hour long sessions.

Needless to say, I still have the same shut off problem, although it seems to not happen as often as before I sent it in. I definitely did not update to the firmware you mentioned myself and I sent it into Allstate several months ago. I'm still trying to understand what the deal is.
Mine were shutting off but more like every 30 minutes. I figured maybe the headphones thought I took them off my head so I turned off that feature and they stopped shutting off

No, this started happening to many directly after the update.
